Every year coach Cal Everett has the Cougars in contention for the Mid-Penn Colonial league title. He also expects to compete for a state title every year. Saturday night in their season opener, they looked the part. Elias Coke, Neamiah Ewell and Zymere Hill combined for seven scores and the Cougars began their campaign to return to the state title game with a solid 50-20 win, a game that didn’t end till after midnight. (more on that later)

The 6’2″, 195 pound Coke, a sophomore, hauled in 4 passes for 77 yards and two scores while Hill, a junior, ran for 152 yards and scored three times. Ewell churned out over 200 yards and two scores.

The first two possessions of the game ended with interceptions, but the Cougars rebounded on the third drive of the game, marching 77 yards to get the first score on a 14 yard run by Hill. The Cougars made it a 14-0 game late in the first with Shawn Lee dropping a perfectly placed ball in the corner where Coke make a great catch for the score.

 

It was all Cougars from there on out. York finally managed to get on the board in the third quarter when George Banks scored from 4 yards out. The fourth quarter saw some difficult moments as emotions spilled over on the field.  With 6 minutes remaining a brawl erupted on the York sidelines that nearly had the game ended, but both Coach Everett and York High coach Russell Stoner decided to use the moment as a teaching lesson rather than end the game. Both teams met at midfield with apologies coming from both sides, and the game resumed to the end. A very good moment and great lesson for all the players. Cudos to both coaches.

Harrisburg will travel to Delaware Valley next Friday while York High looks to rebound with Hempfield.
