The landscape of our worlds is always changing, but two things that have rung true since gridiron football was established are that a good defense and an elite running game will win you football games—and that occurred tonight. “I told the guys at the end, a win’s a win. I mean, we always know coming here that it’s a tough place to play. That’s a very tough football team; Coach Breon has them playing hard. It’s a great home game environment, and I’m just happy we were able to grind it out and get a W.”
The Falcons managed to take almost half of the first quarter off the clock before Gerald Sanders cashed in from 5 yards out (6:45, 1st; PAT blocked). The story of Mifflin County’s offense tonight, aside from one possession, was red zone woes, which first showed itself on the following series. The Huskies finessed their way into the red zone before a 4th-and-2 pass from Chase Hartung was deflected in the end zone, turning the football over on downs.
Mifflin County finally managed to get on the scoreboard, taking advantage of a short field after a Cyril Green punt return. Chase Hartung connected with Landon Haigh for a 3-yard score (PAT good, 7-6, 42.2 seconds remaining in the 2nd). The Falcons flew on the next drive as Braeden Heckard got his team down into field goal range, ending the half with a 38-yard Brandon Fritz field goal (9-7).
The rest of the ball game was essentially a defensive grudge match, as both teams got into the opponent’s red zone several times, but neither was able to capitalize.
