Mifflin County wins share of Mid Penn Colonial Title in Thrilling Fashion @MCHuskyFootball @WPVarsityFB

Trailing 21-7 to start the second half, the Huskies turned to what they do best. “We went to our heavy set and we kinda wore them down, then we brought the speed in and we were able to get Schaeffer into the game” said Head Coach Scott Sechler. The Huskies scored 21 points to take a 28-21 lead, then stopped a West Perry two point play with under a minute to go, securing a 28-27 win and a share of the Mid Penn Colonial League title along with Shippensburg. The win also extended the schools longest winning streak to 6 and earned them a date with State College in the District 6, six A title game.

The game was also a tale of two halves, for as dominant as the Huskies were in the second half, the Mustangs controlled the first half. Star quarterback Kenyon Johnson ran for 2 scores and threw a 5 yard td pass to Luke Shaffer. In all, Johnson accounted for all four of the Mustang tds.

The game got off to a slow start until the fourth offensive series. The Mustangs went on a 9 play, 64 yard drive that ended with the Johnson/Shaffer hookup at the end of the first quarter.

It didn’t take long for the Mustangs to get on the board again. Thanks to a short punt from the Huskies,

they had great field position at the Mifflin 32. Johnson’s 5 yard run made it 14-0. “He’s truly a gifted athlete and tough to stop” said Sechler.

The Huskies got their lone first half score on a one yard run by Nathan Poche at the 3:56 mark in the second.  That drive was aided by a Noah Wright-Zach Bickart 30 yard connection, and a great 15 yard run by Wright to set up the td.

 

West Perry answered back with a 65 yard drive to extend their lead to 14 again on a 10 yard Johnson run, the halted a Mifflin scoring threat late in the half when luke Shaffer intercepted Wright in the endzone, but the drive gave the Huskies the momentum they were looking for. “We wanted that score there late in the first, but we kept the momentum going in the second half” said Sechler.

The Huskies made a key stop on the first Mustang series of the second half, stopping them on a fourth and one at their 14. Several plays later Steven Schaeffer got his legs under him for a 21 yard scoring run.

Mifflin then took advantage of two Mustang turnovers, the first recovered by Taytdum Fortson at the Mustang 46. Poche then got his second score of the night to tie the game at 21 with 6:50 left in the game. Another turnover gave the Huskies the lead when Shaffer rambled 33 yards down the sideline, putting the home team up 28-21.

“We knew we could get the score” said Johnson of the ensuing drive. “We wanted the win”. Staring at a fourth and goal from the 15, Johnson rolled out, couldn’t find an open receiver and made an incredibly acrobatic play to get into the endzone. “They had everything covered and I thought if I just wait we aren’t going to get this so I took off.”

 

“We had a great play called, then he just did what he does” said Mustang head coach Bob Boden. On that two point play, we wanted to go for the win. We knew the game outcome wouldn’t too much affect our next week so we went for it, it just didn’t work out”.

 

It feels great, I know it’s cliche’ but it’s true. These kids worked hard in the off season and that’s where you win games.
