This Saturday at 1 o’clock, the Spartans of Wyomissing hope to continue their mission of returning to the state finals and hopefully win one. What they don’t want to do is become the next Middletown and lose three straight title games. But that’s the horse before the cart. First they’ll have to get past a horse of another color, the Mustangs of West Perry.

The Spartans come into the game with a 11-0 record and they haven’t been tested yet. Their closest game came two weeks ago, a 21-0 win over a very strong Lampeter-Strasburg team. The key for the Spartans is as always, get that run game going. And run they will, it’s what they do. Charlie McIntyre, Matt Kramer and Andrew Eisenhower have combined for nearly 2,500 yards on the ground on 230 carries. You know where they’re running as well, behind big Jven Williams. Here he leads the way for McIntyre last week:

There’s a new wrinkle, and one they’ll likely need this week and if they win, next week for sure. The Spartans passing game has improved. They don’t us Ben Zechman’s arm much, but when you’re 44 of 62 for 764 yards and 8 tds, 71%, you’re a weapon. Eisenhower is his top target along with Ethan Brower. You can count on Ian Levering putting the ball through the uprights for points as well.

Defensively, the Spartans have only given up 14 or more three times. Logan Hyde had a pick 6 last week. Caleb Brewer is an absolute menace on the line. Linebackers Ryker Jones and Drew Forrey along with Guard Pacen Ziegler lead the defense for the Spartans. They’ll want to put lots of pressure on Marcus Quaker but they’ll also need to contain the shifty QB.  Add in the fact that they’re only giving up 7.5 points a game, that’s a pretty tough defense.

11-1 West Perry comes in with a different picture offensively. They rely on Junnior quarterback Marcus Quaker who is a threat to both run and throw the ball. He’s got nearly 1,200 on the ground and has crossed the goal line 23 times and over 1,800 in the air with 21 td passes. There’s also no doubt who he’ll be throwing to. Ian Goodling has caught the majority of Quakers throws to the tune of over 1,100 yards. He plays much bigger that the 6-1, 170 listing. He’s also money with his kicking foot, having recently nailed a 48 yarder and is very accurate with extra points.

Trent Herrera is a nice target out of the backfield, and he’s a workhorse to carry the ball. He’s got nearly 1000 yards on the ground. Derek Snook will also find the hole to plow through.

Defensively the Mustangs are solid but they’ll need to play very disciplined football to stop that Spartan wing-t. Goodling and Brad Hockenberry lead the team in tackles. Holden Bassett had 5 sacks and Snook has 4.5, but there won’t be many opportunities for those numbers with the Spartans running the ball so much.

They can’t start slow and let the offense fall behind quick like they did against Steelton-Highspire. The Mustangs will have to come off the bus fired up.

Overall, this game should be a battle and a fun game to watch.
