They say the dress rehearsal is always worse than opening night. Mechanicsburg sure hopes so, as they were unable to get their offense going against the Thundering Herd in an early morning scrimmage at Ken Millen Stadium in Carlisle.
Mechanicsburg managed only 47 yards rushing and 130 yards passing in the game. 52 yards came on a touchdown pass from Micah Brubaker to Joey Rowland, Mechanicsburg’s only score.
Carlisle’s offense faired much better, especially their run game, which amassed 334 yards on the ground, 219 yards by Jeremiah Hargrove on 17 carries. But against the Wildcats veteran defensive backfield, the Herd could only manage 14 yards passing on 5 attempts. Carlisle scored twice during the varsity portion of the scrimmage, winning 14-7.
Mechanicsburg Head Coach Anthony Rose did find some positives in the play of offensive linemen James Nguyen and Ben Grill, and the defensive play of DE Sam Geraty, LB Sam DeLuca and reserve DB Parker Sample. Geraty and DeLuca each had sacks.
Sample, a sophomore, entered the game in the first period after an injury sent Senior Caleb Brubaker to the sideline. Sample continuously punched above his weight and made several tackles, filling in admirably for Brubaker, a first-team, all-section safety.
Mechanicsburg begins their season Friday at 7pm against West Perry at John H. Frederick Field in Mechanicsburg. Carlisle opens Friday at 7 pm at Exeter Township’s Don Thomas Stadium.
