Governor Mifflin ranked number 2 in the state by the pafootballnews.com state rankings had to wait an extra day to play the York High Bearcats, but they did not disappoint in a victory Saturday night at Smalls Field. After being rained out on Friday night Governor Mifflin took care of business with a commanding 55-6 win. Head Coach Jeff Lang on not playing Friday night and having to travel back to York from Reading “It was very frustrating we all thought we should have played the game looking at the radar everything was moving east, I did not like having to drive a bus ride home and then back to York, but proud of our kids to respond and come up with the victory”.

Lead by Penn State 2022 recruit Nicholas Singleton Mifflin ran over and around the York High defense.  Singleton finished the evening with 281 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns. Singleton on his team’s performance “Yeah felt good to finally get out there and play, I can’t take all the credit coach made the right calls, and the line blocking did a great job”.  Lang on his star RB “He is just a blast to coach, he has been great for 4 years and we got some unfinished business”. When asked if he has a comparison to any other RBs in the area over the years Lang said “He is one of a kind, he is powerful, strong, and very fast RB”.

Singleton scored on touchdowns runs of 8, 8, 70, 32, and 50 yards. Singleton has the explosiveness, power, strength, and speed of an elite RB. He can do it all from his RB position for Mifflin. Mifflin is an I Option team already and having a star RB to go with the offense only makes it excel even more. QB Eden Johnson also contributed to the running game with 64 yards rushing on 8 carries and a rushing touchdown. FB Tyler Rock also contributed to the run game with 31 yards on 6 carries.

One of the impressive moments of the game was early in the game when Mifflin faced a 4th and 7. Mifflin ran an option play and Johnson pitched it to Singleton, but two York High defenders waited to stop Singleton. Singleton powered through both defenders and got the 1st down. Lang on that play “You saw on 4th and 7 he took defenders on and got that 1st down”. Singleton simply said, “Yeah for sure, whoever’s in the way you have to run through them for the first down”.

On the second drive of the game, Mifflin went 95 yards and chewed up most of the 1st quarter and Singleton finished the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. Then the next drive York High fielded the Kickoff out of bounce at the 4.  On the 1st play of the drive, York High tried a halfback pass and Ayden Martin picked it off for a pick 6 and Mifflin was ahead 14-0 just like that. Coach Lang on that play and his philosophy on offense “That’s why we grind it out and don’t put the ball in the air too much”. Mifflin only attempted two passes on the evening, both were incompletions.

Governor Mifflin has extra motivation this year. Last year they lost to Pine-Richland 44-42 in the PIAA Playoffs, it is the motivation for this team going forward. Coach Lang “We got some extra motivation after last year”. Singleton on playing week one “It means a lot, we fell short last year against Pine-Richland and trying to get to the state championship game this year”. After week one Governor Mifflin looks like they will have a chance to make a deep PIAA playoff run this year. I wouldn’t count out Singleton or Mifflin.

York High then had a 3 and out and Mifflin received good field position. Another grind-it-out drive-by Mifflin ends with Singleton with an 8-yard touchdown rush. York High then took an extended drive but they turnover over on downs. Mifflin seemed content to run out the clock but with under 20 seconds left in the half, Singleton scored another touchdown this one from 50 yards.

In the second half alone Singleton had touchdowns runs of 32 and 70 yards and set up another touchdown with a long run.
