State College rolled through the Carlisle Thundering Herd on Friday night, scoring 54 points in the first half en route to a 60-0 victory. Senior quarterback Eddie Corkery played less than half the game but racked up four touchdown passes.

The Little Lions started hot with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Corkery to senior Ty Salazer on its first possession of the game. It was clear where this game was headed after State College’s Hank Lustig recovered the onside kick, setting his side back up on offense.

The Little Lion offense wasted no time and scored one minute and 31 seconds later with another Corkery to Salazer connection, this one from 18 yards out. The Carlisle offense still couldn’t get anything going and punted it right back on their next possession.

Senior captain Cooper Brushwood got himself on the board with a scramble drill touchdown reception from Corkery, putting State College up 21-0 with 3:26 to play in the first quarter.

The State College special teams continued to impact the game on the Herd’s next drive. Sophomore Kellen Williams blocked the Carlisle punt and set State College up on the two-yard line. On the very next play, senior running back Lamar Wilson punched it in to extend the Little Lions’ lead to 28-0.

The domination by State College continued in the second quarter. Junior Quincy Smith and Salazer each scored a defensive touchdown and Corkery threw his fourth touchdown pass, this one a 23-yard strike to junior Daimear Coad. On the final play of the first half, Williams threw a three-yard touchdown to senior tight end Darryl Lunon to put the Little Lions up 54-0.

With a 54-0 lead at the half, it was time to pack it in. The Little Lions only scored six points in the second half, a touchdown pass from Keen Furmanek to Evan Grubbs, but still coasted to a shutout victory.

State College Head Coach Matt Lintal was pleased with the way his team avoided distractions during a busy homecoming week and made quick work of the Thundering Herd. “I’m proud of our kids,” Lintal said, “Obviously Carlisle’s been down a little bit this year, and we just want to make sure that we play the type of football that we can play. I’m really proud of our kids for having the focus and intention throughout the week, even with homecoming, to be able to be focused and come out here and get the job done in the right fashion.”

Lintal’s squad could have easily looked past Carlisle with a huge showdown with Bishop McDevitt looming next week. Bishop McDevitt is 8-1 and has not lost since Aug. 31, when it lost at home to Harrisburg 35-33.

The loser of next week’s game will be eliminated from the Mid-Penn Commonwealth race and State College is ready for the high-stakes matchup. Wilson said, “[McDevitt]’s a very tough opponent, but we’re going to go to practice this week and practice hard and come out going 100 miles an hour next week like we do with every team.”

“You can’t take anyone in our conference lightly and obviously you’ve gotta be prepared for those big games,” Lintal said. “Bishop McDevitt’s having a great season as well. A lot of eyes will be focused on that game, but we’re just focused on us; we want to make sure we play good, clean football.”

The Little Lions will take on Bishop McDevitt at home on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:00.

Carlisle is back in action next Friday, Oct. 25 when it takes on Altoona.
