Wyomissing weathers the storm to take down Middletown Area 14 to 0 at Wyomissing Football Field, Saturday afternoon !

This game was definitely a tail of two halfs, at least as far as the weather goes. We started out with a drizzle, then a couple of heavy downpours that didn’t last long, then more drizzle with some heavy wind added in at times blowing canopy tents off the press box, down the bleachers to which those canopy tents had to be taken down, and put away. All that happened just before kickoff. During the first half however, it basically just rained lightly making the field wet and hard to maneuver the ball at times. Both teams would trade punts for most of the first half with the Blue Raiders able to get into Spartans territory just once in the first quarter when they would reach the Wyomissing 45 but would have to punt. The score at the end of the first quarter would remain 0 to 0 going into the second quarter with the Spartans having the ball 2nd down at their 35.

Wyomissing would get a couple long runs by Amory Thompson, and Tommy Grabowski who would finish the day with about 30 carries for over 150 yards and two touchdowns, the drive would stall however and the Spartans would have to punt once again. What a punt it was as it would roll and be downed at the Middletown 3 with just over nine minutes to go till halftime. The Spartan defense, as it did all day, would hold the Blue Raider offense to a three and out, and Middletown would punt with Wyomissing having it first and ten at the Blue Raiders 30 yard line. A play or two later would see a fumble by the Spartans recovered by Blue Raiders big guy #9-Tajae Broadie at the Middletown 28. On the ensuing play, the Blue Raiders would cough it up and the Spartans big time player #85-Aiden Mack would recover and Wyomissing would regain possession and control of the game, at the Blue Raider 24 yard line with about 5 minutes still to go in the first half. Shortly after, we would see our first and only score of the first half when Grabowski would take the handoff and scamper 16 yards for the touchdown, the kick would be good and we had ourselves a close 7 to 0 game heading into halftime.

During halftime, something else happened, the skies would break, and we would start to see the sun… Woo hoooo right !! Yes, that was great for the game, but unfortunately for me, my phone was soaked from recording and I couldn’t record anymore, nor do my normal scoring updates but anyways… back to the game, with sunny skies now.

To begin the second half of play, the Blue Raiders would be kicking and BANG, Wyomissing’s Amory Thompson would break and rush down field to the endzone but, the touchdown would be called back. Not a problem for the Spartans however, as they would still get the ball and put together the best drive of the day, 8 minutes, 17 plays for 79 yards and the score with just under 4 minutes to go in the quarter when Spartans go to guy this day, would rush 1 yard for his second touchdown, giving Wyomissing the lead 14 to 0 after the Ian Levering point after attempt was good. The rest of the game, pretty much played out like this… Middletown had the ball, Spartans would take it from them, or just plain old stop them. Wyomissing defense stood strong all day, limiting the Blue Raiders to just 49 total yards, and 3 first downs. Middletown QB Tate Leach was held to 0 of 8 passing and I believe 2 interceptions.

With the win, Wyomissing(12-0) will play for the District IV Championship vs Boiling Springs(who beat Hamburg 35 to 7) next Saturday, November 20th, 2021 at Wyomissing Football Field as stated after the game. Coach Wolfrum said after the game when asked how he felt going up against (11-1)-Boiling Springs, he would say, ” they’re offense is very similar to what So. Columbia(who Wyomissing defeated mid season) runs so uh, it should be easy to prepare, actually, they’re a basic wing-t offense so. ”
