Allentown Central Catholic stopped Jersey Shore on 4th and goal from the 4-yard line in overtime to advance to next week’s PIAA quarterfinals with a 38-31 win.

Tied at 31 at the end of regulation, after a missed field goal attempt by the Vikings, Jersey Shore won the coin toss and elected to play defense, and two plays later the Vikings broke the tie on an 8-yard run by Caiden Shaffer to make it 38-31.

On Shore’s overtime possession they moved the ball down to the four on runs from Brady Jordan and Hadyn Packer. Packer was stopped for no gain on 3rd down, then on 4th down, Jordan rolled to his right looking for a receiver. With no one open, he tucked the ball, lowered his shoulder, but was stopped short of the pylon securing the Vikings’ win.

Prior to the overtime period the game was back-and-forth for 48 minutes with the ‘Dawgs taking the early lead. With just under six minutes remaining in the opening quarter thed Jersey Shore defense sacked Viking QB Edward Ferguson, picked up his fumble, and returned it for the score to lead 7-0. The Vikings would strike later in the quarter to tie the game up on a short run by Shaffer.

A Shore fumble late in the 1st led to more Viking points early in the 2nd as Luke Myers drilled a 21-yard field goal with 10:40 remaining to put ACC in front 10-7. Just over two minutes later the Vikings extended the lead to 10, 17-7, on a 16-yard run by Shaffer.

On the Bulldogs’ ensuing possession they answered on a Jordan TD run from 45 yards to pull back within 3 points, 17-14, with 6:47 left. The Vikings, however, would again increase the lead back to 10 on a blocked punt to go back in front, 24-14.

Shore closed out the half with a score. This time they dug into their bag of tricks and executed a perfect “hook and ladder” with Packer on the “ladder” end, to again pull within three of the Vikings, 24-21.

Again the Vikings pushed the lead back to 10 on another Shore miscue. This time, the Vikings picked off Jordan and returned the ball 31 yards for the score, going up 31-21. Just past the midway point of the quarter Packer and the Shore offense struck again as Packer went untouched up the middle for the 70-yard score, cutting the lead back to 3, 31-28.

The Vikings held on to their slim lead until 9 seconds into the 4th when Shore’s Breck Miller hit a 34-yard field goal.

The Vikings will take on the winner of Juniata and Meadville next week at a date, time, and location to be determined.
