Wellsboro senior Keegan Clemens made his commitment to Bloomsburg University as the newest member of the Husky Football team on Wednesday, July 15.

Clemens will have to wait a season before he steps on the field for the Huskies due to the PSAC suspending NCAA competition for Fall 2020, but he is going to use his “down time” wisely.

“Hopefully I’ll improve on everything. Improving on football and in academics,” he said. Clemens has been a two-year starter at tackle for the Hornets where he helped anchor a very strong offense that produced over 8,000 yards of total offense the past two seasons. In 2019 the Hornets accumulated 4,665 yards of offense with over 3,500 yards coming on the ground.

After having a conversation with head coach Matt Hildebrand and the staff after the 2019 season continuing his football career became a reality.

“I don’t think college football was really on his radar until after we talked,” said Hildebrand. “I let him know he could definitely play at the college level. He has the attributes in just his size that college coaches are going to like. Once we sent him on some visits Bloomsburg jumped right in, and he liked them, so I think it’s going to be a good fit for both of them.”

“When I went on my visit I liked all the coaches and they gave me a chance,” continued Clemens. “The campus is really nice. I’m probably going to redshirt my freshman year then the next two years after that I want to work on cracking the starting lineup.”

Clemens started playing football for Wellsboro just three years ago as a sophomore. He saw limited action that season then eventually became a 1st team NTL All-Star.

“For me it felt like I started late so I had to prove myself more. I worked harder to try and get a starting spot, that didn’t happen because we had so much talent but I think me not playing freshman year made me work harder. The coaching staff was great, all my teammates surrounding me made me even better, and all my teammates were supportive of everything I did and I think it lead to some recognition on the field.”

“One of the biggest things with Keegan is that he’s developed that ‘edge’,” continued Hildebrand. “When he was younger we couldn’t figure out what made him tick, what made him get angry because we knew he had the size and he had great feet but we couldn’t get him angry. He would get more frustrated with himself but as he got older and gained maturity he got over that and developed that edge. I’ve really enjoyed seeing that and that made our team better.”
