Spartans victorious, Jaden Leiby is Honorary Captain…

What a fantastic start to the 2021 high school football season Friday night at the Silver Bowl, that saw the Red Tornadoes host #1 ranked and defending District XI Class 3A Champion, North Schuylkill Spartans in cloudy, wet, rainy conditions. What else could any football fan ask for right? Maybe a delay to begin the game, or maybe another delay during the second quarter due to a nearby lightning strike. With all that said and done, the Spartans wouldn’t be denied victory in front of a great North Schuylkill crowd and Honorary Captain, former 2-way star player, Jaden Leiby, who was injured during a play a few years back that sidelined him for the rest of the season, and left him unable to walk.  Before the game, Jaden rose the American Flag during the National Anthem, and then was pushed out to mid-field where he was announced as Honorary Captain. To add more excitement to the story, Friday night’s game also began the 90th season for the Silver Bowl stadium which was built in 1932, the Silver Bowl is one of the oldest standalone, continuously operated high school football stadiums in the country.

The game finally began at 7:30 after a 30 minute delay. North Schuylkill won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Spartans began the game like they did all of last season, scoring touchdowns. It didn’t take long either when Senior QB, Jake Hall connected with Joey Flail for a 7 yard touchdown. North Schuylkill would lead 7 to 0 with 8:29 to play in the first quarter after kicker Gavin Mentzer drilled the extra point.

It was now Mount Carmel’s turn for their offense to take the field. Much like what the Spartans did, the Red Tornadoes did the same, until they got down inside the North Schuylkill 10 yard line. It was 3rd down and 6, at the Spartans 8 yard line, when the Red Tornado Senior QB, Pedro Feliciano fumbled the ball, and turning it over to North Schuylkill with around 3 minutes to play in the quarter. Nothing would amount to much for the Spartans on the drive, and we would go to the second quarter with North Schuylkill leading the Red Tornadoes 7 to 0. Mount Carmel would get another shot on offense, this time in the second quarter where it looked like the Red Tornadoes were starting to figure things out and move the ball. The drive would get down to about the 10 yard line when the Red Tornado QB took it himself to the left, and scampered into the endzone for the score. The extra point was good, to tie the game at 7 a piece with 4:45 to play in the half.

Both teams would get the ball one more time in the half, but nothing came from either teams drive, keeping the score tied at 7 at halftime!

“SECOND HALF OF THE STORY TO COME LATER TODAY”… so stay tuned
