UNION TWP- The Northwest Area Rangers, a long time member of the Wyoming Valley Conference in District 2, made the jump this year to be part of the Northern Tier League in District 4. Saturday night they opened up play, because of a weather-related postponement Friday against Columbia Montour Vo-Tech. The Rams probably wished the game was canceled all together after the Rangers obliterated CMVT by a score of 61-6 before a packed house at Lewis and Miller Stadium where the only in question was what would be the name of the new Ranger mascot.

Northwest jumped out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter and extended to a 55-0 advantage by halftime. The second half was played in mercy rule regulations as the only bright spot for the Rams was Dante DiAgostino’s five yard score to dash the hopes of an opening night shutout by the home team.

CMVT fans should have sensed doom on the opening drive as the Rams decided to take a chance on a fourth and four from there own 37 yard line and came up empty from there Northwest advanced the ball inside the ten and Carter Hontz capped the drive with an eight yard score to make it 7-0 with 8:18 left in the quarter.

Adam Chonko then scored for Northwest at the 3:40 make of the quarter making it 14-0. After a CMVT turnover, Hontz wasted little time hooking up with his receiver Andrew Bonczewski for a 48 yard score. Jake Bobersky capped off the first quarter onslaught with a 38 yard dash making it 28-0 at the end of the quarter.

Special teams got involved in the scoring column to start the second quarter, Chonko returned a bouncing punt at his own 38 and proceeded up the visitors sideline for a 62 yard score with 8:50 left. Then Hontz went back to the air and connected with tight end Chase Biller, who ran over a Ram defender, at the goal line to make it a 48-0 lead with 1:31 to go before half.

Northwest coach Lon Hazlet was pleased with his teams performance, but knows he has formidable opponent in Montgomery next week, who defeated Hughesville 20-7. Meanwhile CMVT will try to forget about this loss and prepare for a strong Muncy team, who is coming off a loss to District XI powerhouse Northern Lehigh 40-21.
