Clayton Smith rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Evan Woodward threw for two scores as Troy defeated Hughesville 36-0 to open the District IV Class 2A playoffs at Alparon Park on Saturday, November 4.

Troy opened the scoring on a one-yard run by Smith with 2:26 to cap a 12-play drive after the Spartans went three-and-out to begin the game. Smith found the end zone for a second time on the evening just four seconds into the second quarter, this one on a 4-yard run after the Spartans’ second three-and-out. The Trojans opted for two points following both touchdowns, and converted both of them, to lead 16-0.

Hughesviile put together a long drive after Troy’s second score, working all the way inside the Troy 30. The drive stalled on a failed 4th down try after the Spartans were hit with a holding penalty, giving the ball back to Troy at their 20. Troy’s offense went back to work, putting together a 15-play drive that ended with a 5-yard pass from Evan Woodward to Lincoln Chimics to go up 22-0.

At the halftime intermission Troy’s offense went back to work, scoring not even three minutes into the third quarter. Runs by Mason and Clayton Smith moved the ball into Spartan territory where Woodward and Chimics connected again, this time on a 37-yard pass. Woodward ran in the two-point conversion, pushing Troy’s lead to 30-0.

Following another four-and-out by the Spartans, Troy scored for the final time with 4:06 left in third quarter on a 3-yard run by Mason Smith.

The NTL Large School Division champion Trojans (11-0) host Line Mountain back at Alparon Park next Friday, October 10.
