Troy – The Troy Trojans pounded out their first victory of the season, 20-7 over the visiting Sayre Redskins at Alparon Park last night.

“The kids really played physical tonight, and our defense held up. I’m proud of the way the whole team played” said Troy Head Coach Jim Smith after the win.

The Trojan defense held the Redskins to -18 yards rushing on the night, while pounding out 338 yards of their own.

Sayre won the toss and started things off by driving from their own 40 to the Troy 3 yard line with a mixture of runs and short passes. But the Trojan defense would stiffen, pushing them back to the 11 yard and forcing Sayre to attempt a 27 yard field goal which was no good.

The Trojan offense would answer right back, marching 80 yards in 16 plays, capped off with a 1 yard touchdown plunge by QB Dominic Ayres. Seldon Rogers PAT was true, and Troy led 7-0 at 11:42.

The teams traded possessions before Troy set up first and ten on their 34 yard line. Tyler Williams took the handoff over the right side of the line and raced 66 yards for the score. Rogers PAT was good, and Troy extended their lead to 14-0 at 7:15 mark. They would take that lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Redskins began the second half with Patrick Casterline intercepting Ayres first pass attempt. On the very next play, Corbin Brown hit Nathan Garrity with a 15 yard scoring strike. James Esposito’s PAT was good, and the lead was cut to 14-7 at 10:58.

Troy’s next possession would stall at the 30 yard line, where Rogers 46 yard field goal attempt fell short.

Following another Sayre punt, the Trojans would drive 63 yards on 17 plays to the Sayre 8, where Rogers 25 yard field goal was wide right. But on their next possession they finished off a 57 yard 11 play march as Tyler Williams crashed in from 8 yards out. The PAT was blocked, and the final score was set 20-7.

Williams led all rushers with 197 yards on 25 carries with 2 TD’s. Bailey Cohick added 99 yards on 18 carries.

Corbin Brown led Sayre with 138 yards passing and 1 score.

Next week Troy travels to North Penn Mansfield, while Sayre plays _________
