Bellefonte off to first 2-0 start since 2018, Halterman leads the Raiders with 3 tds

It’s been a while since the Raiders started a season with two wins. 2018 to be exact. Friday night at Rogers Stadium they had to work for the 28-11 win. It actually looked like the Raiders were going to get win #2 this year in dominating fashion. Just three plays into the game Ashten Howell burst down the sidelines for a 73 yard td run. The kick was true and just like that Bellefonte led 7-0.

Then, the game kinda went into neutral for a while. It wasn’t until midway through the second quarter that another point was scored, and it was only three points at that. Chestnut Ridge hit on a 29 yard field goal. In between scores we had some strange action. There was an inadvertent whistle that negated a Bellefonte play. Another series saw the Bellefonte punter field the snap with his knee on the ground.

The second half was a much different game. The Raider defense, who as a group had three interceptions, (two of them stopped Lion drives deep in Raider territory) forced a punt and quarterback Liam Halterman went to work. He found a wide open Jaeden Gabrovsek over the middle for a 50 yard td pass to make it a 14-3 game early in the third quarter.

Head coach Tony Confer said the key was “physicality and effort. Ridge is a very good football team. Offensively we have some things to clean up. Defensively we played a great game. They try to wear you down and I felt like we were able to wear them down”.

Ridge battled back, driving to the Raider 30 but and interception by Ashten Howell, his second of the night, ended that drive. Halterman was then picked off on their drive by Owen Claycomb. He returned the pick to the Ridge 46. Lion Quarterback Cale Harrison used his legs and a couple nice passes to put Ridge in scoring position at the Bellefonte 4. Big Haydan Webb, who had 80 yards on the night, went in from the four yard line to make a game of it. They also got the two making it a 14-11 lead for the Raiders.

That’s as close as the Lions would get. Bellefonte went on a eight play, 65 yard drive to pull ahead 21-11 with 7:02 left in the fourth. Halterman ran the ball to the corner of the endzone. “First of all, I’m going to say what I said last week. Our line was great” said Halterman. Bellefonte got an insurance td with 3:29 left in the game when Halterman, who threw for 161 yards and two tds in addition to his rushing td, hit Grabrovsek for another score from five yards out. Halterman didn’t want to take the credit. “Some times I had to run around and make plays but also give credit to the receivers who were able to break free”.
