Ramblers cage BlueJays in a hot one!

In a WestPac opener the Windber Ramblers controlled the line of scrimmage and rolled to an easy 44-0 victory over the host Conemaugh Valley BlueJays. CV had the ball all but six seconds of the first six minutes but failed to produce any points. Their first six plays netted 2 yards. They did get one first down on a roughing the punter penalty and recovered a Windber fumble and the Rambler 14, on Windber’s first offensive play of the year. CV senior Bruce Moore recovered the fumble but the Rambler defense shut down the BlueJays again as Noah Heltzel’s pass was knocked down in the end zone on fourth and five from the 12. Windber took four plays to go 91 yards and score as senior Nick Dom swept around the left end and raced 61 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked. The BlueJays would hold the ball the rest of the first quarter but were stuffed on fourth and 3 from the Windber 35 at the beginning of the second quarter. The Ramblers next drive went 65 yards in six plays featuring a big 30 yard pass reception. Junior back John Shuster scored around the right side on a 15 yard run. It was 14-0 at the 916 mark of the second quarter.

CV picked up a couple of first downs on a short 8 play drive but a five yard punt gave the Ramblers good field position. This time it took the Ramblers five plays to go 60 yards. One play after Bruce Moore sacked Windber quarterback Aiden Gray, senior Dylan Tomlinson raced up the middle 53 yards for a touchdown. It was 22-0 at the 134 mark. CV who fumbled 3 times already finally lost the ball one play after the kickoff. This time Windber went 38 yards in four plays. Shuster scored again around the right side from 19 yards out. The BlueJays ran two plays and we went to the half 28-0.

Both teams had long drives to start the 3rd quarter. The Ramblers overcame a holding call and drove inside the BlueJays ten before turning it over on a fumble. CV drove from its own 7 to the Windber 36 before turning it over on downs. The big play was a Nick Heltzel 31 yard run from his own 29 on a fourth and four. Windber ran one play and the third quarter ended.

Windber lost the ball on the first play of the fourth on a fumble. Three plays later CV fumbled it back. Windber now went 52 yards in eight plays to start the mercy rule with 6:01 left in the game. Shuster capped the drive with his third touchdown run. The Ramblers overcame a personal foul and a sack with a 25 yard pass play. The BlueJays turned the ball over on downs 4 plays later. Windber’s second team went 46 yards in three plays. Junior Jonah Oyler scored on a broken play from 42 yards out. Junior Ethan Brady ran the two pointer in to cap the scoring. CV ran one play and the game ended.

It was a tough opener for the BlueJays. Despite the heat CV is a great place to watch a game. The kids play hard and as usual the community has something going on at the game. The School honored the military with camo uniforms which had to be hot in the 90 degree weather. The also honored the livredfoundation.org. It’s a non-profit organization named after 20 year old Olivia Red who died in 2018 helping a friend. Their mission is to educate, inspire and encourage people to choose kindness and compassion to bring the best out in humanity, a great cause.
