Why do you play football?
Football isn’t just a game to me. Football is a lifestyle, it is everything to me. Ever since I could physically throw, catch, hold and pick up a football I instantly fell in love. Growing up watching my two older brothers and uncle dominate made my love for the game stronger and stronger. Hearing about my pops and my grandfather’s achievements and me carrying our last name, I have no choice but to keep the legacy going. I don’t just see every game as a game or every practice as a practice, it’s something I love to do, day in and day out and I’ll never get tired of it.
What has been your best memory from football so far?
Most definitely my two touchdowns against the best team in the state, Southern Columbia. I scored two back-to-back touchdowns in our first round of states in under 9 minutes in the second quarter to bring us within a touchdown to end the half. This gave my teammates and me a boost we all needed and were looking for. I’m glad I was the one to show out and provide it for us.
Who is your favorite pro athlete and why?
My overall favorite pro athlete would have to be Mike Tyson. That man is a man amongst boys every time he steps foot into that ring. No matter what size of his opponent, you could see the fear in their eyes. His shots were just so hard and violent no one wanted to square up against him. His attitude and demeanor are similar to mine on Friday nights.
Who is your biggest fan and why?
Most Definitely my mom and yes I’m sure y’all were expecting that but there is no one even close to being a runner-up. I could never ever thank her enough for all she has done for me so far in this long exciting stressful journey, but someday it’ll all pay off I promise and I tell her that each and every day.
Is there any specific person you look up to and use as a role model?
I’ve always looked up to my brothers and my dad the most but outside of family would definitely be LaRod Stephens-Howling. Born and raised in the same small town as me and played for the hometown school. LaRod was a DAWG and the stat book says it all. He showed everyone in the J that if you put your all into something and never give up nothing is impossible and to not ever give up on your dream. He committed to the University of Pittsburgh and got drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 7th round in 2009. Seeing him and all he has accomplished just gives me more and more faith in my dream to make it to the league and out of Johnstown.
What is your desired major in college?
Psychology.
Coming off a year with COVID struggles what do you think this year will be like?
Honestly, I feel COVID-19 had more of a positive impact on me than negative. It gave me more and more time to work on my craft with no distractions at all. I found myself every day going down to my trainer and getting at least two hours, if not more, of work in. If it wasn’t for covid I don’t think I would’ve had the season I did last year.
Favorite play to run?
Goal Line Fade for sure!! That ball is mine when it’s in the air.
What is your personal goal for this season?
My Overall personal goal is to bring the first-ever state title home to Richland. I just feel that would top off my high school legacy perfectly and my promise to Coach Bailey intact. I’ll do everything in my power to bring that title home, whatever it takes.
Favorite pre-game meal?
Egg Salad.
Sports movie?
Creed.
Sport you’d love to play but can’t?
I always had an interest in Men’s volleyball but since my school doesn’t have a male team I have to stick to destroying in gym class.
Most embarrassing sports moment?
Oh my, my biggest embarrassment in sports would definitely have to be my first ever AAU tournament in Ohio when I was in the fourth grade. Our team was getting smacked by another team from Kentucky. I was getting so mad about the score that I took matters into my own hands. I grabbed a rebound and instantly took the ball the other way for a lay-up, but later realizing on the way to the basket that no one was cheering and no one was chasing me. I honestly just thought I was the flash or something but came to find out, it wasn’t our basket.
What are you looking forward to most this year?
To show everyone that Griffin LaRue is the real deal.
Favorite activities?
Honestly, my favorite activities are lifting, working out, and going out with my friends.
