2022 D6 A Quarterfinal Game Preview: Glendale @ Penns Manor

The 2022 PIAA D6 Class A football playoffs start this weekend.  The teams are looking to end their seasons with a trip to the Chap for PIAA Championships on December 8.

In 2021 Bishop Guilfoyle beat Juniata Valley 24-21 in the D6 A Championship.  Bishop Guilfoyle went on to win the state A championship 21-14 over Redbank Valley.  Bishop Guilfoyle has won the last 3 D6 A Championships.  With Bishop Guilfoyle moving to AA this year, there will be a new Class A champion this year.  Juniata Valley has made the D6 A championships 3 times in the last 4 years, and won in 2018.  Juniata Valley has won three D6 A titles in their history (1986, 1987,2018), and made the finals 6 times.  Homer-Center has made the D6 A finals 2 times in the last 6 years and won in 2017.  Homer Center has four D6 A titles (1985, 1994, 2013, 2017), and have made the championship game six times.  Penns Manor won the D6 A title in 2011 in their only appearance in the D6 A Championship game.  Portage has made the D6 A finals two times but has never won.  Moshannon Valley has three appearances in the D6 A final with their only win in 1996.  Northern Cambria has made the finals one time in 2003 and lost.  Cambria Heights made the 2020 Class AA championship but lost in their only appearance in a D6 Championship game. Glendale has never made it to the championship game. Here are the 8 teams in the 2022 A D6 Tournament with seed and season record:

Let’s look at Penns Manor v Glendale

On 11/4 #8 Glendale (5-5) will travel to # 1 Penns Manor (9-1) for a D6 A quarterfinal matchup.  Penns Manor comes into the game ranked #10 in the state by Pa Football News (check out all the PFN rankings at: PFN Rankings).  Penns Manor won the Heritage Conference going 9-0 in conference games.  Penns Manor’s only loss was last week to the #8 state ranked AA team Berlin-Brothersvalley 35-0.  Glendale comes into the game after finishing 8th in the Inter County League.  Glendale won last week 49-23 at home against Curwensville.

Penns Manor is led by Senior QB Max Hill and Senior RB Justin Marshall on offense.  This season Hill has passed 34-76 for 535 yards with 8 TDs and 4 Ints.  Hill has also rushed 155 times for 1,325 yards with 24 TDs.  Hill averages 8.5 yards per carry and has seven 100 yard games this season.  Marshall has rushed 73 times for 627 yards this season for an 8.6 per carry average.   Marshall is also the leading receiver on the team with 13 catches for 244 yards with 1 TD.  Senior RB Ashton Courvina has 73 rushes for 508 yards with 4 TDs, and Senior RB Mark Bagley has 51 rushes for 339 yards and 3 Tds.  Courvina and Junior Carter Smith each have 3 TDs receiving.  As a team Penns Manor has rushed for 3,037 yards on the season with 37 rushing TDs.  Penns Manor averages just over 34 points per game, and has outscored their opponents 348-152.  On defense, Penns Manor is led by ILB Junior Carter Smith.  Smith has 121 tackles this season.  Max Hill leads the team with 4 sacks.  Seniors Eric Baum and Justin Marshall have 3 INTs each.  Smith also leads the team with 3 fumble recoveries.

Glendale is led by Senior RB Zeke Dubler and Junior QB Troy Misiura.  Dubler has rushed 189 times for 1,540 yards for a 8.1 yards per carry average and 21 TDs.  Misiura has passed 56-102 for 717 yards with 2 TDs and 8 INTs.  Senior Logan Cree has rushed 56 times for 265 yards and 2 TDs.  Cree leads the team with 20 receptions for 238 yards.  Senior Lucas Tarnow has 13 receptions for 220 yards.  On defense, Glendale is led by Senior Logan Cree, Sophomore Landen McGarvey, and Freshman Daniel Williams.  Cree leads the team in tackles with 81 and INTs with 3.  Cree also has 3 sacks this season.  McGarvey has 68 tackles and 5 sacks.  Williams has 64 tackles and 4 sacks.  Senior Britton Spangle leads the team with 11 sacks.  As a team, Glendale has rushed for 2,226 yards with 25 rushing TDs.  Glendale has 28 sacks on the season.  Glendale has outscores it’s opponents 230-197 this season.

The Class A D6 playoff consists of 8 teams.  The tournament starts with the quarterfinal round 11/4, semifinals 11/11 and the D6 A Championship at Mansion Park 11/19 @ 7pm.  The quarterfinal and semifinals will be played at the top seed’s field.  The 2022 D6 A Champion will play the D4 A Champion either 11/25 or 11/26 in the Quarterfinal round of the PIAA Championships.  The Heritage Conference is well represented in this year’s D6 A playoffs.  The Heritage conference has 5 out of the 8 teams.  Top seeded Penns Manor has beaten half the teams in the tournament this season.
