2022 D6 AA Quarterfinal Game Preview: Southern Huntingdon @ Bishop Guilfoyle

The 2022 PIAA D6 Class AA football playoffs start this weekend.  The teams are looking to end their seasons with a trip to Chapman Field at Cumberland Valley High Scholl for PIAA Championships.  The Championship will take place 12/9 @ 1pm.

In the 2021 D6 AA Championship, Richland beat Forest Hills 35-6.  Richland has won the last 4 D6 AA titles.  Richland also won in 2012, and has been D6 AA runner up 3 times.  Richland’s 5 D6 AA championships are 3rd most all time behind Tyrone(9) and Forest Hills (8).  Bishop Guilfoyle moved to AA this year after a very successful run in A.  Bishop Guilfoyle has 6 D6 A titles and made the D6 A Championship 9 times.  Bishop Guilfoyle has 4 PIAA A Titles (2014,2015,2016,2021) and was PIAA A runner up in 2019.  Bellwood-Antis has 5 D6 A Titles (1997,2004,2006,2007,2012) and 1 D6 AA Title (1988).  Bellwood-Antis was the runner up in D6 A-4 times and D6 AA-2 times.  Bald Eagle Area has made the D6 AAA finals 5 times and won 3 titles (1988,2018,2019).  Mount Union has been to the D6 AA championships 3 times and has never won.  Penns Valley, Southern Huntingdon, and West Shamokin have never been to a D6 championship.  Here are the seeds and season records for the 8 teams in the 2022 D6 AA tournament:

Let’s look at Southern Huntingdon v Bishop Guilfoyle

On 11/04 at 7pm #5 Southern Huntingdon will travel to Mansion Park to play #4 Bishop Guilfoyle for a D6 AA Quarterfinal game.  Southern Huntingdon finished the season 7-3 and 3rd in the Inter County League.  Southern Huntingdon lost a close game 40-33 to undefeated Northern Bedford (10-0).  Northern Bedford is Honorable Mention in class A in the Pa Football News Rankings (check out all the rankings: PFN Rankings ).  Bishop Guilfoyle, the 2021 PIAA A State Champion, finished the season 7-3 and 5th in the tough Laurel Highlands Conference.  Bishop Guilfoyle lost close game to two state ranked teams.  Bishop Guilfoyle lost 21-20 to AAA #10 ranked Central, and lost 39-34 to AAA #7 ranked Penn Cambria.  Bishop Guifoyle’s other loss was 18-7 to Bedford.

Bishop Guilfoyle is led on offense by returning A Player of the year Senior QB Karson Kiesewetter, Senior RB Cooper Rother, and Senior WR Dominic Yanoshak. Kiesewetter has passed 98-145 for 1,426 yards with 14 TDs and 4 INTs and has rushed 132 times for 973 yards (7.4 average) with 19 TDs.  Rother has rushed 102 times for 582 yards (5.7 average) and 9 TDs.  Rother also has 33 receptions for 425 yards and 3 TDs.  Yanoshak has 22 receptions for 318 yards and 2 TDs.  Bishop Guilfoyle has rushed for 2,395 yards and 39 TDs and passed for 1,646 yards and 15 TDs.  Bishop Guilfoyle averages 39 points per game and have outscored their opponents 392-147.  On defense, Bishop Guilfoyle is led by Junior LB Kaden Wyandt, Senior OLB Anthony Cioffari, Senior LB Dominic Yanoshak, and Senior DL Sante Bambocci.  Wyandt has 98 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 INTs.  Cioffari has 97 tackles, leads the team with 13.5 sacks, and has 1 INT.  Yanoshak has 85 tackles.  Bambocci has 82 tackles and 8.5 sacks.  As a team, Bishop Guilfoyle has only allowed 14 points per game.  On special teams, Bishop Guilfoyle Sophomore K Michael Cacciotti has made 25-28 PATs, and Sophomore K Gonzalo Alonso has made 23-24 PATs and made 2-3 FGs with a long of 37 yards.

Southern Huntingdon is led on offense by Senior QB Nate Myers, Senior WR Owen Winter, and Sophomore WR Chase Gibbons.  Myers has passed for over 5,000 yards with 65 TDs and rushed for over 3,600 yards and 46 TDs for his career.  This year Myers has passed 128-240 for 2,573 yards with 34 TDs and only 9 INTs.   Myers has rushed for 1,593 yards on 224 carries and has 26 TDs rushing.  Winter has 68 receptions for 1,452 yards and 21 TDs.  Gibbons has 23 receptions for 483 yards and 8 TDs.  Southern Huntingdon has averaged 44 points per game and has outscored their opponents 442-314.  On defense, Southern Huntingdon is led by Myers and Senior LB Mitchell Hart.  Myers has 115 tackles and 2 sacks.  Hart has 84 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 INTs.

The winner of this game will play in the D6 AA Semifinals against the winner of the Richland/West Shamokin game. That preview located HERE

The Class AA D6 Tournament consists of 8 teams.  The quarterfinal round is 11/04, the semifinals are 11/11, and the D6 AA Championship will be held at Mansion Park on 11/18 at 7pm.  The 2022 D6 AA Champion will move on to play the D4 Champion on either 11/25 or 11/26 in the PIAA AA State Quarterfinals.
