WINGATE — BEA started the season as a state title contender. Then a funny thing happened along the way. They took a big loss to Bishop Guilfoyle in the season opener. Almost double the losses as All State qb Carson Nagle left that game pretty banged up and was questionable for the start last night. Nagle has some good trainers. He led the Bald Eagles to a 39-14. BEA’s all-state quarterback Carson Nagle returned from an injury in Week 1 and threw for 366 yards on 22 completions and three touchdown passes to lead a balanced BEA offense in a 39-14 win over Central Cambria. The defending D6AA champions moved to 1-1 on the season with the win.
“One thing about him is he’s not going to quit,” Eagles head coach Jesse Nagle said when asked about his QB playing through pain. “He knew the team needed him, and he knew that if he could be out there, he was going to be. I’m really proud of him and of the rest of the kids, they all battled for each other tonight.”
BEA grabbed a 12-0 lead in the 1st quarter after Nagle hit Grady Fisher with 80 and 56 yards. Fisher had a huge night with six catches for 211 yards. Beau Taylor had 10 catches for 96 yards on the night. Central Cambria cut BEA’s lead to 12-7 on the first play of the 2nd quarter on a 5 yard TD pass from Hunter Pittsinger to Grady Snyder.
The Red Devils stunned BEA on the first play of the 3rd quarter with a 65 yard Pittsinger to Ian Estep scoring strike. But Central Cambria’s 14-12 lead only lasted about two minutes. BEA’s still developing offensive line (Gage Gardner, Jake Gardner, Silas Wheeler, Gavin Moyer, and Dakota McCool) dominated the game in the 2nd half as the Eagles scored 27 unanswered points to pull away for the win.
Junior RB Carnell Noone had an awesome debut in the Eagle backfield as he had 3rd quarter TD runs of 26 and 30 yards as part of the 134 rushing yards he picked up on just 15 carries. Those scores came in the 3rd quarter; while Ethan Shirk’s 5 yard run and a 7 yard Nagle to Wyatt Spackman pass accounted for the Eagles’ two scores in the final period.
Matthew English kicked three PATs for BEA. Except for a few big pass plays, BEA’s defense led by Spackman, Brayden Dubbs, Kaden Clark, and Kollin Cunningham had a very solid night. BEA will host 0-2 Penns Valley on September 6 with the Iron Bell traveling trophy on the line.
“We needed this one, last week we came out flat. These kids needed to feel the emotion of playing a major part and winning. We go one week at a time so we want to go 2-1 next week” said Nagle.
Next Friday Bald Eagle will host the Penns Valley Rams (0-2)
