Bishop Guilfoyle wins one for the thumb

Bishop Guilfoyle had their backs against the wall before the 1A title game started. A team that has thrown for over 3,500 yards was looking into a 40 mph wind gust that never gave up. Nor did the Marauders. Leaning on their run game, specifically Jordan Coniglio who rushed for 161 yards and four tds, the Marauders broke a 14-14 tie in the third quarter with a 65 yard td run by Hamilton Gates and never looked back on their way to a 41-22 win and a fifth title for the Marauders.

“Our quarterback has like 3,500 yards and today he was our lead blocker a lot of times. He kept coming to the sidelines and saying “I’ll lead block, whatever I gotta do” said Head Coach Justin Wheeler while celebrating the win. “When you’re the starting quarterback all year and you become a fullback in the state championship you can either get made or you can embrace it. We can run the ball. It’s just so fun when you have a quarterback with the talent to throw it. You saw that here today. We had to lean on the run game”

BG got things rolling with a fourth down stop of Port at their 45. Chase Kissell busted off a 12 yard run, Taurean Consiglio had a 10 yard run then he scored from 12 yards out. The kick by Michael Cacciotti was good and the Marauders led 7-0.

BG took control after forcing a Gator punt and drove 61 yards to make it a 14-0 lead on a six yard td run by Consiglio.

The Gators fought back long drive of their own to make it a 14-8 game with a three yard run but the drive for them was a costly one as they lost a key player for the rest of the game, Tristan Kaiser. Port opened the second half with a long, time consuming drive to tie the game at 14 with 4:32 left in the third.

The tie didn’t last long. Three plays into their first drive of the half Hamilton Gates took off down the sidelines for a 65 yard td. The kick made it 21-14 BG and they never looked back.

Our guys didn’t take a play off. We just played four full quarters. They’re so selfless. They don’t care what it takes.

Our offensive line guys, we challenged our line. All week long everyone talked about their line and they should, that’s a very good team they have. We saw the forecast, we knew we were going to have to run and we challenges our guys all week.

Gates said “We had it (confidence) all game. Our coaches at halftime made some adjustments and we just took over. It’s my team that makes it work. That line is just so explosive this year”.

BG extended their lead with a quick three play drive highlighted by two big runs by Consiglio, a 23 yard run on first down then a 26 yard td run on third down. The kick was good and the Marauders were on their way to the win. BG slammed the door shut when Braden Reilly picked off Brennan Fillhart then a couple plays later Reilly took a pass from Kissell 26 yards. “Fake 38 pass. We been running that all year. Chase always puts the ball there and today I was wide open”.

Coniglio closed out the scoring with a 15 yard td run. “My team. We all did our assignments. We all just played really well, our line especially. We never let ourselves give up”,
