Heritage Conference Matchup

West Shamokin Wolves (4-2) at Northern Cambria Colts (4-2)

The Northern Cambria Colts broke a two game losing streak with a hard fought 35-26 victory over the visiting West Shamokin Wolves. The game started out slowly but ended in a rush of points. The Wolves drove 51 yards on their opening drive but turned in over on downs at the Colts 14. The Colts got one first down before punting it back to the Wolves. West Shamokin second drive used up the rest of the first quarter as they drove from their 35 to the Colts six.  On the first play of the second quarter quarterback Lou Swartz hit tight end Pete Orlosky on a quick slant for the games first score. The Colts answered immediately with a 65 yard drive of their own. The big play was an Owen Bougher 43 yard pass to Peyton Myers. Bougher than hit Ty Dumm for the touchdown and the game was tied. The Wolves got the ball and once again drove inside the Northern Cambria red zone before turning it over on downs again. Bougher and Swartz than traded interceptions. Northern Cambria had the ball on their own 20 with 1:56 to go in the half and decided to keep on throwing it. Thirty seven seconds later Dumm scored his second touchdown beating coverage down the right sideline for a touchdown. West Shamokin had the ball now on their own 21 and just over a minute to go in the half. On the first play of the drive Swartz scrambled down his own sideline and was hit high and late by Dumm. Flags were thrown and when it was sorted out, the Wolves were in Colts territory and Dumm was ejected from the game. Three weeks ago they put one second back on the clock against Homer-Center and Lou Swartz threw the game winning touchdown. This week the Wolves drove inside the Colts red zone again and with one second to go Lou Swartz danced around scrambled out of the pocket and threw a touchdown on the halves final play to Ezra Oesterling. The kick was no good and the Wolves trailed by one at the half. The play before had only taken four seconds and it appeared the half should have ended.

The second half started with the Colts starting to dominate up front. Junior center Brayden Peles starting for the first time in two weeks was opening up some big holes. Austin Amsdell and Dawson Shutty were throwing Wolves around too. The Colts went 55 yards in just over three minutes to recapture the momentum. Jackson Sheredy scored the first of his two touchdowns. The Wolves went three and out and punted. The Colts now had a fourth  and one at their own 47. Run the ball right? Bougher from the shotgun threw deep just missing a wide open Xander Dolansky.  West Shamokin had new life and used up the rest of the third quarter driving to the Colts six. Just like the second quarter the Wolves scored on the first play of the fourth quarter. Swartz’s third touchdown pass went to Oesterling again. Swartz however was stopped on the two point attempt which would have tied the game. One play later and the Colts were up two scores. Peyton Myers ran by a West Shamokin defender as he fell down and caught Bougher’s pass in stride for a touchdown. Trey Pershing’s fourth extra point gave Northern Cambria a nine point lead. Swartz bought the Wolves right back throwing another scrambling touchdown, his fourth to Dylan Wolfe. But the Colts would respond with a 63 yard drive as their offensive line just mauled the Wolves. Sheredy scored his second. The Wolves would get the ball twice more, throwing desperation passes. The first drive ended with a Peyton Myers interception and the second as the game ended.

Dumm Ejection- I feel the referees usually do a great job and take a lot of crap. However I really don’t think Ty Dumm should have been ejected.  Football is an emotional game and things happen quickly. I don’t think there was malice or intent. The call was targeting and they tried to explain the hit was meditated. However they originally ejected the wrong player Jackson Sheredy. If we aren’t sure if #10 or #22 made the hit how can we be sure of anything else.
