Finn Furmanek had him a game tonight. Standing at his own 11 yard line, Furmanek saw a hole in the middle, ran through it and to his surprise he saw nobody in front of him. 89 yards later he was “just so tired, I couldn’t believe it. I just kept running, I just wanted to get to the endzone. That was probably my longest run ever”.  The senior signal caller racked up over 400 yards of total offense to lead State College to a come from behind 48-31 win over Cumberland Valley at Memorial field in State College.

“A lot of credit to Cumberland Valley, they came in here ready to play. Their quarterback (Isaac Sines) is really special, you have to limit his big play ability” said State College head coach Matt Lintal. The Little Lions did have trouble slowing down Sines in the first quarter. On the first drive of the game Sines took off for a 40 yard td run to put the Eagles up 7-0 early. That lead lasted 12 seconds. On the kickoff, D’Antae Sheffey streaked down the sideline for a 93 yard td to tie the game at 7. It was a sign of things to come in the first half that saw 62 points scored.

The Eagles and Sines came right back. Starting at their 37, the Eagles continued to run through the State High defense. Josh Wagenheim busted loose for a big gain to the 23, then Sines hit Caiden Pines for the score to put CV back on top 14-7. After forcing a punt, the Eagles went back to work but had to settle for a 42 yard field goal by Sines to take a 17-7 lead with 2:28 left in the first quarter.

On the next State drive Adam Somerville picked off Furmanek and the Eagles drove 71 yards for their next score. Two big runs by Sines got them to the 32. The Eagle qb then hit Griffin Huffman for a 32 yard td. Huffman mad a beautiful over the shoulder catch, beating out a State High defender for the score. Have to credit Sines for the throw as well, it was placed right where it needed to be.

CV held a commanding 24-7 lead. Then, something crazy happened. “You know, when your dealing with kids, momentum is everything” said Cumberland Valley head coach Josh Oswalt. “We had it, they they start hitting home runs and it just kinda went away.” The first home run came when Sheffey scored from 8 yards out. The td drive didn’t start well. State High was backed up to their own 34 after what appeared to be a long td pass was called back for pass interference. Furmanek busted off an 18 yard run, then a late hit added 15 more. Finn ran a couple more times before Sheffey made it 27-14 with 8:15 left in the second quarter.

“I’m just proud of the defense and our coaches that made the right adjustments on defense” said Lintal. State High forced another punt, and that led to the second home run, the 89 yard run by Furmanek.

With 5:13 left in the half State cut the CV lead to 27-21. The home runs kept coming. Following a masterful punt by CV that put State on their own one, Furmanek found Ty Salazer for an 98 yard td pass. Salazer made a great move to get away from the defender.

Then with just 50 seconds left in the half, the SC defense forced another punt giving them the ball at the 40. Furmanek busted loose for 19, the Sheffey played the tip drill to perfection giving State College a 35-27 lead at the buzzer.

“Great blocking, had a wide open hole on the kick return. On the tipped pass, I was just surprised I was in bounds. It happened so fast, I can’t believe I caught it” said Sheffey. The second half saw State high miss on a field goal attempt, but on their next drive Furmanek hit Salazer again for another home run, a 44 yard td pass to put the Little Lions up 41-24 midway through the third quarter.

Sines led his team on another scoring drive and finished it with a one yard run, but the Lions slammed the door shut when Sheffey busted off a 42 yard td run late in the third.  Furmanek had 263 yards passing with three td passes and ran for 165 yards. Salazer had 2 td receptions and an interception, Sheffey finished with 138 yards rushing and a td, 32 yards receiving with a td catch.

For State College, they’ll finish up their season and hope to go 10-0 for sole possession of the Mid Penn Commonwealth crown at Chambersburg. Cumberland Valley will look to rebound hosting Altoona.
