Huntingdon— The Huntingdon Bearcats gave up two touchdowns late in the 4th quarter last night to drop their season opener 30-17 to the Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties.

The Bearcats held PO to a 3 and out on their opening and then responded with a 8 play 50yd drive of their own capped by an Elliott Guisler 10yd TD run to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead at the 5:01 mark of the first quarter.

The Mounties answered right back with a drive of their own but stalled at the Bearcat 19-yard line after Guisler tipped away an Archer Baughman pass in the end zone on 3rd down.  Carson Long came on and nailed a 26-yard field with 54 seconds in the quarter to make the score 7-3.

In the 2nd quarter, Baughman found receiver Sam McDonald open in middle of the field for a 33-yard touchdown pass that put the Mounties up 10-7 with 6:37 to go.

Finding themselves down for the first time in the game, the Bearcats responded as they methodically marched down the field and capped another drive with a touchdown as Guisler found received Caleb Rutter on a crossing pattern and delivered a 26-yard strike for the TD giving the Bearcats a 14-10 lead.

On Huntingdon’s very next drive, running back Evan Edmiston carried the ball early and often capped by a big 23-yard run to set up Kaiden Snare’s 26-yard field goal and to give the Cat’s a 17-10 lead with 54 seconds to go in the first half.

Then lightning struck for the Mounties.  McDonald fielded the ensuing kickoff at the 5-yard line and sprinted up the home sideline 95 yards for the touchdown with only 10 seconds left on the clock.  Just like that PO had tied the game 17-17 heading into halftime.

The third quarter was quiet at War Vets Field as neither team could add to the scoring.  With 8:07 to go in the fourth quarter that all changed as Parker Lamb raced through the middle of the Bearcat defense for a 68-yard touchdown run that put the Mounties up for good 24-17.

Colton Chapman capped the scoring with a 10-yard run with 1:33 to go in the game sealing the victory for the Mounties 30-17.  This is the second straight year that PO has defeated Huntingdon in the opening week of the season.

“I thought we played well”, stated 2nd year Head Coach of the Bearcats Tim Lucko.  ” We obviously need to clean up the penalties and that is on me. Im proud of how we fought tonight.  We just need to keep doing what we are doing, and good things will come”
