Sometimes it isn’t how you win, it’s just that you win. Saturday night at Mansion Park Stadium Juniata did just enough to get a 20-6 win over Bellefonte to win the District 6 Class 4A title. “Our defense has been solid all year long and that was a rough start with all the turnovers, both teams had a lot of turnovers” said Juniata head coach Kurt Condo.
That rough start. The Indians fumbled the ball away on their first play of the game but two plays later Bellefonte coughed up the ball. On the next set of series’ Juniata quarterback Wyatt Ehrenzellar threw an interception giving the Raiders the ball on the Indians 23. Bellefonte got to the 8 but again fumbled the ball away. Juniata then mounted a 9 play, 79 yard drive but they fumbled the ball away for the third time. It wasn’t until the Indian defense forced a Belletone punt that put the ball on the Raiders 40 that Juniata capitalized on. Lane Peiper finished the 9 play drive with a one yard run to give Juniata it’s only points of the first half.

Bellefonte had one last drive that reached the Juniata 28 but were forced to punt. During the kick to open the second half the Bellefonte player misplayed the ball and Javier Lopez recovered the ball on the 17. Peiper needed just one play to make it a 14-0 lead. “We got the turnover on the kickoff in the second have and were able to score and that gave us a little breathing room and allowed us to get more comfortable” said Condo.

Bellefonte responded with a 12 play 84 yard drive that was capped off with a 2 yard run by Halterman. The kick failed leaving the score 14-6 Juniata. After an exchange of possessions by both teams, Juniata drove 75 yards for the final score of the game. Ehrenzeller hit Peiper for a 22 yard gain to the 2 then he carried the ball in himself for a two yard td run.

“I absolutely love this team. To get 7 wins this year that nobody thought we could get is a testament to their hard work, it’s a testament to the hard work of the coaches. These kids, they worked hard for this. But to get to this point and have a legitimate shot to win a district 6 title, we’re going to keep plugging away” said Bellefonte head coach Tony Confer. Bellefonte finishes their season at 7-5.
For Juniata, they’ll face an undefeated Shamokin next week in the state playoffs.
