WestPac Matchup

Last Meeting: 9/25/20 BlueJays 6 @Mustangs 27

Conemaugh Valley’s second straight homecoming did not go as well as last weeks. Last week the BlueJays beat Northern Cambria in their homecoming game. This week they loss to Portage on Ferndale’s homecoming. CV is playing as a co-op between Conemaugh Valley and Ferndale.
The BlueJays were outgunned from the start. They went three and out on their opening drive and punted. Portage went 41 yards in a minute and 23 seconds. Oren Heidler scored the first of his two touchdowns to cap the drive.

CV fumbled on its second possession. The Mustangs went 56 yards in just over four minutes for their second touchdown. It came on fourth and six from the 16. Andrew Miko hit Gavin Gouse in the right corner of the end zone.

Portage kicker Dylan Tubbs who was 5 for 5 on extra points for the day had two touchbacks on his first two kickoffs. The third one was fielded inside the five but the returner fell down. Three plays later the Mustangs had pushed the BlueJays back into their own end zone for a safety. It was 16-0.

Portage this time drove 38 yards in three minutes. The Mustangs scored again on fourth down. Kaden Claar raced around the left end to make it 22-0.

Tubbs finally had a normal kickoff and Noah Heltzel made Portage pay. Heltzel fielded the ball on his own 15 and raced all the way across the field before going down the left sideline for an 85 yard touchdown. Both teams were stopped on fourth down attempts before Portage would score just before the half. Claar scored his second with seconds to go in the half.

It was 29-7 at the half.

Portage fumbled on its opening possession of the second half. The BlueJays gave it back on downs. Jon Wolford capped a 64 yard drive for the only score of the third quarter.

The BlueJays had their best drive of the game on their next possession. After another touchback they drove inside the Mustang ten, taking up over six minutes before turning it over on a fumble. Two plays later Heidler broke loose on an 84 yard touchdown run to start the mercy rule. Both JV teams would add a touchdown. The final score Portage 49 Conemaugh Valley 13
