PIAA District Playoff: Altoona (5-5) and Mifflin County (6-4)

These two teams will meet Friday night at Mansion Park Stadium for the chance to play undefeated State College for the District 6 Championship. These two teams met earlier this year with Altoona thumping the Huskies 38-0. Since then, both teams went on to their respective conferences. The Mountain Lions found some success early in the season during their independent schedule, going 4-1, but struggled in Mid Penn play and are currently on a three game losing streak. Coach Vince Nedimyer still likes his team. “We’re just a couple plays from being 6-4 or 7-3. We’re happy to be in the playoffs’.

Altoona has the defense to stop teams. DE Manny Miller and safety Tyson Reid play hard and fast. The offense is led by quarterback Brennen Freiwald and running backs Reid and Alexander Yost. Yost is a sturdy back that can hit the holes. Both backs are averaging over 5 yards per carry.

Mifflin County will counter with qb Landen Eichhorn. Landen has thrown for nearly 1500 yards this season. His favorite target is senior wideout Isaac Wilson who has 37 receptions for over 500 yards. Running the ball for the Huskies is junior Deakon Schaeffer. With over 1000 yard and 10 tds, the Huskies would like to get the ground game going early to open up the pass. It won’t be easy against that Altoona defense.

Defensively it’s linebacker Reagan Ettinger who leads the way for Mifflin County. Parker Kearns and Brody Rishel are 2nd and 3rd on the team in tackles but preferably they like to see lineman Travis Renninger make the stops up front.

The Huskies, much like Altoona, started off strong also rolling to a 4-1 record but again, like Altoona, league play wasn’t kind to them. They do come into this game with a win over Red Land last week. Throw out the records and last weeks results. It’s playoff time and everyone is 0-0. This has the makings of a good game.
