Homer-Center Wildcats(0-3) at Purchase Line Red Dragons (1-2)
Last Meeting PL 42 @ HC 22 10/20/23
PL Coach Matt Falisec after the game-“This game set football back 50 years.”
Titles I had in mind for tonight’s game.
If HC won “Wildcats losing streak is Dunn!”
If PL won “Red Dragons Victor (Bartlebaugh) over Wildcats”
If no one won -“Game ends as referees run out of flags & teams run out of balls”
There wasn’t 400 total yards between the teams, there were 18 penalties & 8 turnovers. For the second straight week the game was almost three hours long. I don’t mind long games if they are played well. Give the kids on both teams credit they never gave up and the game went down to the final seconds.
The Dragons opening drive featured seven straight runs and an interception by Wildcat Oshen Maratita at the HC 6. The Wildcats had a penalty and were forced to use a timeout before punting three plays later. Brady Frazer a rising star total flipped the field position on his punt aided by a PL block in the back. Three plays later facing a fourth down (thanks to a personal foul) the Dragons lined up to punt in their own territory but Victor Bartlebaugh took off and got the first down. Bartlebaugh would score seconds later on a 44 run through a gaping hole on the Wildcats right side. After a Wildcat penalty the Dragons went for two and led 8-0.

The Wildcats would than go on their best drive of the night 68 yards & over seven minutes. Braden Dunn would hit Riley Cobaugh for the TD. Dunn would than catch a pass from Carson Arone to tie the game at 8-8.

Both teams would get the ball once money and have penalty filled drives. We went to the half tied at eight. The Wildcats started the second half with the ball, backed up at their eight due to a penalty. Carson Arone came into quarterback & Dunn moved to running back. Arone completed his first pass before Bartlebaugh picked off the second pass. Hard running Devlan Kordish would score a few plays later and the Dragons were back in the lead 15-8.

Arone’s next pass was picked off by Kordish but the Wildcat defense came up with a huge stop inside the Red Zone. The Wildcats would go three and out with Dunn back at the quarterback spot. Frazer would hammer another long punt which was touched by a Red Dragon player giving the Wildcats a 50 yard gain. The Wildcats went backwards thanks to a sack and a penalty, but on fourth down Dunn hit Collin Daugherty down the right sideline and the game was tied again.

Both teams punted on their next possessions including two major fouls on one punt. The Wildcats finally got a chance to take the lead on the next play when #52 recovered a fumble at the PL 40. This time it was the Red Dragons defense that came up big. The Wildcats totally shut down the PL running game after the Kordish TD and the Red Dragons went to the air. Quarterback Ian Layden lead a 69 yard drive for a touchdown in just under two minutes to put PL up 21-15.

The Wildcats fumbled the kickoff and the game appeared to be over, but the Wildcats defense pushed PL back to Clymer with some help from penalties. The kids from Homer never quit and started a drive from their own seven with about four minutes to go. But the Wildcats just missed on a deep pass and on the next play Bartlebaugh picked off Dunn. Final PL 21 HC 15
