Return of Kiesewetter inspires BG, Marauders dominate Southern Huntingdon for playoff win

When you’re missing your starting quarterback, it can really mess up your game. Last week against Bedford, Karson Kiesewetter was out with an illness. Sophomore Chase Kissel stepped in, but the young qb wasn’t the threat that BG was used to having and they lost to the Bison. Karson returned tonight and sparked a first half explosion of points, leading the Marauders to a 41-0 halftime lead. He never saw the field in the second half, but he’d done enough and BG cruised to a 54-14 win at a gusty Mansion Park in Altoona. “Having Karson back was a big boost for us” said Wheeler after the game. “When he’s played I don’t think we’ve punted much so having him back in the lineup was critical.” Kiesewetter had a hand in four scores, three rushing and one passing.

The wind definitely played a role in the first three scores for BG. Southern failed to move on their first drive but the punt into the gusting wind only went 25 yards giving BG the ball at the 36. Several plays later Kiesewetter ran in from the two giving BG a 7-0 lead.

On their next drive the Rockets took a chance on fourth and one from their own 28, and it worked. A fake punt plus a 15 yard penalty put the ball on the BG 6, but on fourth down Kieswetter knocked away a potential td pass for the Rockets. It took one play to turn the tide. Taking the ball in the endzone, Cooper Rother burst through the line for a 68 yard gain to the Rocket 30. Kieswetter finished the three play drive from 24 yards out to give the Marauders a 13-0 lead with 2:33 left in the first quarter.

With the kick going into the endzone (aided by the wind) Southern started at their 20 yard line but only gained seven yards and was forced to punt into the wind again. With good field position at the 40 of the Rockets, BG wasted little time padding their lead. Drew Abraham busted loose for a 38 yard gain, Karson hit him for 11 more then Rother finished the drive from 13 yards out to make it a 21-0 lead.

On their next drive, the Rockets once again gambled on fourth down in their own territory. This time it failed and BG had the ball at the Southern 35. It took just four plays for BG to score again. Kieswetter hit Anthony Ciofarri for a 15 yard td pass to increase the lead to 28-0. Then the Rockets misfired on the ensuing kick, turning the ball back over to BG at their 27.

Karson hit Rother for a 22 yard gain then Abraham carried the rock in from 5 yards out putting the talley and 35-0. Kieswetter scored his last touchdown with 2:15 left in the half, a 25 yard run around the left side. The point after missed but BG went into the break leading 41-0, which invoked the running clock in the second half.

The Rockets finally got on the board after a BG turnover with Mitchel Hart running in from 32 yards out. Backup qb Kissell headed for the endzone on the ensuing drive but lost the ball at the goal line. Trent Adams scooped up the ball to give BG a 48-7 lead.
Myers busted loose for a 70 yard td and Kissell closed out the scoring.

BG will travel to Richland for the D6 Semifinal. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Bald Eagle Area/Penns Valley game.
