On Sept. 14, State College linebacker Michael Gaul announced his commitment to Villanova University. Gaul, a three-star recruit, had nine other offers, most notably from Virginia Tech.

The two-time All-State player was drawn to Villanova by far more than athletics. “Villanova is an incredible academic institution, there’s always life after football and I recognize that,” Gaul said, “That’s a place that could get me to the place I want to be in life forty years down the road. If I can’t make a living off of purely football, I can fall back on that Villanova degree and that will set me up for life.”

The on-field reasons were of course very important to him as well. “They’re traditionally a winning program. They have a great staff that has a great history throughout their tenure,” Gaul said, “They’re just a team that wins, they produce talent, and that’s just something I want to be a part of.”

At State High, Gaul starts at both wide receiver and linebacker, but for the next four years he will be focusing on defense. “I don’t have any aspirations of playing offense in college,” Gaul said with a laugh, “That’s beyond me.”

Gaul made his college decision with a close group of supporters, none more important than his family. “My family was a huge part of my decision,” Gaul said, “They’re the people that have raised me, they’re the people that have helped me be who I am today. Without them I would be nothing, so I want them to be a part of my decision always because they know me sometimes better than I know myself.”

Once he graduates from State High in June, Gaul will meet a whole new family of Villanova Wildcats who he will be living and playing with for the next four years.
