Tyrone Turns the Tables, Defeats Bellefonte in Late-Game Thriller

One year ago, Bellefonte stunned Tyrone with a late comeback, scoring with just 21 seconds left to win 21-20.

This year, Tyrone returned the favor.

The Golden Eagles defeated Bellefonte 14-7 Friday night, scoring with just three minutes remaining to finally turn the tables in a rivalry that once again came down to the final minutes.

It did not take long for Tyrone to get on the scoreboard. On the opening kickoff, Colton Frye took the ball 90 yards to the house, giving the Golden Eagles an early 7-0 lead.

After the explosive start, however, both offenses struggled to find much rhythm. Bellefonte stalled on its opening drive with a three-and-out, and Tyrone followed with a three-and-out of its own.

Bellefonte eventually put together a drive resulting with a touchdown run by Howell, but Tyrone’s defense continued to make things difficult. The two teams traded possessions throughout the rest of the first half, with Tyrone managing just two first downs before halftime.

The second half continued to be a defensive battle, with neither team able to consistently move the football.

Bellefonte finally found itself deep in Tyrone territory, reaching the Golden Eagles 7-yard line. With a chance to take the lead, Bellefonte lined up for a field goal that would have made it 10-7.

Then came one of the biggest plays of the night.

With the roar of the Tyrone crowd behind them, Bellefonte’s holder was unable to handle the snap and was forced to improvise with a fake. Bellefonte managed to run the ball down to the 5-yard line, but Tyrone’s defense held strong and prevented the Raiders from finding the end zone.

Tyrone’s offense still struggled to move the ball, but Caleb Whitby gave the Golden Eagles a huge boost with a 66-yard punt, pinning Bellefonte deep in its own territory.

At that point, Tyrone needed one stop and one score.

They got both.

With just three minutes remaining, QB Ben Walk stepped up in the pocket and delivered a strike to WR Mason Emigh, putting Tyrone ahead 12-7 and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Head coach Jason Jones elected to go for two, and Walk once again found Emigh. Rolling to his right, Walk delivered another strike to Emigh to make it 14-7 with 2:40 remaining.

Bellefonte still had one final opportunity.

The Raiders got the ball back looking for a game-tying drive, but Tyrone’s defense continued to hold strong. Bellefonte was unable to complete a pass, giving the ball back to Tyrone.

The Golden Eagles were able to run the clock down to just 12 seconds. With what appeared to be a fourth-down situation coming, Walk surprised everyone by attempting a quick kick, sending the ball deep and putting Bellefonte at its own 19-yard line.

With one final chance, Bellefonte threw an incomplete pass, officially ending the game.

One year after Bellefonte walked away with a 21-20 victory in the final seconds, Tyrone had finally gotten its first Opener win since 2022.

Postgame

Coach Jason Jones said he was proud of all of his players and knew he had a strong group heading into the season. Friday night, that group had the opportunity to show exactly what they were capable of.

WR Mason Emigh also praised his quarterback, saying he was glad to have the “best QB in the LHAC” beside him.

QB Ben Walk kept his focus beyond Friday night’s win, saying his goal is to win a district championship and not focus on individual statistics.

Offense/Special Teams — Caleb Whitby

Whitby came up huge in the field-position battle, including multiple punts that put Bellefonte deep in its own territory. His 66-yard punt was especially important in helping Tyrone set up its late-game defensive stand.

Honorable Mention — Mason Emigh

Emigh came through when Tyrone needed him most, hauling in two key touchdowns from Ben Walk during the final three minutes.

Defense — Dylan Robinson

Robinson was a force throughout the night, making numerous tackles and helping Tyrone limit Bellefonte’s rushing attack.

Looking Ahead

Tyrone will look to carry the momentum into next week when the Golden Eagles travel to Westmont Hilltop.

Westmont Hilltop is coming off a loss to Forest Hills, setting up another opportunity for Tyrone to build on its 14-7 victory over Bellefonte.
