United Valley, in year 2 of the co-op between United and Blacklick Valley, carried the momentum they built at the end of last year into the 2023 season and beat Northern Cambria 20-14.

They also accomplished something that hasn’t been done in awhile for either school. The last time United won a season opener was 2017, and for Blacklick Valley it was 2012.

United Valley’s Senior QB/Safety Isaac Worthington had a nice night on offense but the most important play of the night was a jarring hit on Northern Cambria’s receiver late in the game.  Northern Cambria was 4th and 10 down by 6 with just over 2 minutes left in the game, and they caught a pass that would have given them a first down inside United Valley territory.  But Worthington laid a great hit on the receiver just after he caught it and jarred the ball loose.  United Valley took over and ran out the clock.

Northern Cambria scored first mid way through the first quarter with a 23 yard TD reception by Ty Dumm.

United Valley got on the board late in the second quarter.

United Valley then recovered the kickoff after Northern Cambria misplayed the medium kick.  A few plays later United valley scored again.

The third quarter and first half of the fourth was pretty quiet with the only real scoring chance coming when Northern Cambria drove to the United Valley 23.  But on 4th and 10 Northern Cambria’s pass to the end zone fell incomplete.  With 7:27 left in the game, United Valley’s Senior RB Caden McCully scored on a 10 yard run.  This game United Valley a 20-7 lead.  Northern Cambria scored on Ty Dumm’s 2nd receiving TD from 28 yards out to make the score 20-14 with 2:46 to go in the game.  Northern Cambria recovered the onside kick but after 3 incomplete passes and Worthington’s hit, United Valley ran out the clock to start 1-0.

United Valley will host West Shamokin (1-0) next week and Northern Cambria will stay home and play Conemaugh Valley (0-1).
