Heritage Conference Week#5  Homer-Center Wildcats (2-2) at Northern Cambria Colts (4-0)

A week after allowing a game ending Hail Mary touchdown and 57 points to West Shamokin, the Homer-Center Wildcats defense bounced back and pitched  a shutout! Both teams went three and out on their first possessions. The Wildcats second possession started at their on 32. Two plays later Cole McAnulty fake a handoff and ran straight down the middle of the field 63 yards for the games first score.

As I entered the game tonight several Colts fans told me to watch out for senior back Peyton Myers. He would be a factor in the game. His 37 yard reception on the Colts second possession put them in the red zone. On fourth and one from the Wildcat four, the Colts committed a false start. On fourth and six Colts quarterback Owen Bougher was sacked by Aiden Bekina. It was the first of nine stops by the Wildcat defense in their own end.

The Wildcats than got two first downs via Colts penalties before McAnulty hit Michael Krejocic for 38 yards to the NC seven yard line. Two plays later, Braden Dunn scored. The extra point was wide. The Colts would than drive to the Wildcat twenty as the quarter ended, before turning it over on downs.

HC’s McAnulty was than picked by Myers. After a couple of more NC penalties the Colts faced a fourth and six from the Wildcat 18. The Colts ran a flea flicker. Bougher to Ty Dumm to Myers. The second pass just missed in the end zone and the Wildcats had held again.

Homer-Center than went on a five minute drive. At this point in the game it appeared HC would score again and the game would be over. But on third and long the snap went over McAnulty’s head and when he tried to fall on it , the ball bounced up in the air and Xander Dolansky scooped the ball up and raced into the end zone. The Colts were back in the game.

Homer would than go three and out. The Colts would again drive into HC territory before turning it over on downs. The Wildcats would take a knee and go to the locker room up 13-7.

The second half was all Northern Cambria. The Colts would use six and a half minutes to drive inside the HC twenty before turning it over on downs. The Wildcats would fumble the ball back to NC. The third quarter would end with NC in possession but trying to overcome a series of penalties. The Colts would be forced to punt the ball back. HC was able to get out of their own end, thanks to a couple more NC penalties. McAulty was than picked by Dumm. The Colts would drive inside the ten before again turning it over on downs. The Wildcats were able to take almost five minutes off the clock thanks to a couple more Colts penalties, before punting. With just over two minutes to go, the Colts drove from their own 26 into Wildcats territory overcoming several more penalties. However on fourth and long Bougher’s pass fall incomplete.

The game could have been a Wildcat blowout if they hadn’t had the bad snap. The game could have been a Colt victory if the could have scored just one time on offense. Both teams played hard however the outcome could have gone either way as they both kept self inflicting wounds on themselves. The Wildcats by turning the ball over three time, including a defensive score. The Colts because they couldn’t run a play without committing a penalty. They had 17 accepted penalties for over 120 yards including jumping offside six times to give HC first downs. Both teams will need to bounce back quickly as they are both in the hunt for the conference title.
