Throughout all of 2020, the Rockets struggled to points up on the board. In games against relatively weak defenses like Monessen and Mapletown, the Rockets had to rely on Defense and turnovers to win. Partly a reason would be the ongoing two year drama QB competition between Cole Jones and Colt Fowler. Coach Aaron Giorgi left JM for Waynesburg meaning assistant Brent Baker will take over an attrition heavy Rockets squad.
The COLE JONES vs COLT FOWLER saga must resolve itself for the offense to be effective this season. The Rockets will no longer be able to rely on Jonathan Wolfe in the backfield and must find someone to take the brunt of the rushes. The weapons and experience is there on the lines and at wideout, the question is just who will throw them the ball.
The Rockets bring back some good linebackers in GAGE FALCON, MASON MCNETT and DALTON HEATH. They’ll be relied on to improve the defense while the offense figures itself out through the course of the season. The Rockets have the height and the weight on the lines, and if young talent plays up in the secondary, the Rockets could have one of the better defenses in the conference.
Brent Baker enters this season with the cupboards almost completely bare and a QB situation that could prove volatile. An offense that relied on Owen Maddich and Jonathan Wolfe to score points in 2020 is now left without a primary RB on the roster, a position which has been the Rockets bread and butter for a decade. Talented youngsters KEVIN TEAGARDEN and COLIN BISCEGLIA give hope for the teams future, however this year is a trial run for Baker’s young Rockets. If COLE JONES starts at QB, gets a full season of games under his belt, and the Rockets don’t get completely steamrolled in the last three games of the season, there is plenty of hope for the future in Jefferson.
