Waynesburg looked forward to their move down from 3A in 2020 however the move down may have been a curse in disguise. Now there’s no excuse to the downhill slope the Raiders program has been on. In 2020 Coach Chad Coss was forced to play mostly freshmen and it showed week in and week out. Tragically Coach Coss passed away over the offseason, leading Jefferson-Morgan head man Aaron Giorgi to take over the struggling program.
Whenever an offense leans heavily on a freshman in high school football it’s never a good sign, and that was the Raiders offense and BREYDON WOODS. The Raiders lose their QB in Darnell Johnson meaning that the Raiders will likely look even more one-dimensional in 2021. Partner that with the loss of 4 starting linemen and things start to look dire for an already putrid offense.
The defensive unit was less reliant on freshmen than the offense was, however that may be worse off. The defense didn;t give up less than 40 points down the stretch, and with almost everyone graduating, there is little room for hope.
Team strapped to start sophomores at the 2A level usually receive a notable drop off. Teams that have to start high numbers of freshman experience significant drop in production. The Raiders will likely move from one category to the next in 2021 as Aaron Giorgi goes through the Century conference for the first time. If there’s any promise in the upcoming young core, it won’t be shown until the end of the season after next. Waynesburg opens up with 3 1A teams in a row, which should be an interesting measuring stick for where the program is in comparison to more compatible teams. If the Raiders struggle against a team like Bentworth and get stomped by Beth Center at the end of the year, it may spell doom for the future of the program.
