The football season has begun to take swing in Butler county and Friday night saw a competitive first half between Apollo Ridge and Freeport, before AR took control of the contest in the 3rd quarter, pulling away for a 48-14 road Victory.
The first quarter brought fireworks early as Freeport came out with a halfback pass from Zach Clark to Brady Stivenson that went 56 yards for a hot start as the Port took a 7-0 lead with 8:39 to go in the opening quarter. Apollo Ridge fired a salvo of their own as Jacob Fello hit Klayton Fitzroy for a gain of 40 and Keighton Reese rumbled across the goal line from the 2 yard line soon after to even the score at 7. After a 3 and out for Freeport on the ensuing series, Ridge took over and promptly established their running game. The result was positive as Logan Harmon powered in from 1 yard out to put Apollo Ridge ahead. The extra point was blocked, setting the score at 13-7.
Clark is 2 for 2 on kickoffs into the end zone. I’m a hobbled ex soccer player, so I know a kicker when I see one. Kid has a leg! If you’re a college coach, start checking in. @PaFootballNews #wpial pic.twitter.com/PzzPS1ev14

The second quarter resulted in a see-saw battle as Apollo Ridge further pressed their running game with a plethora of backs at their disposal. They began to stretch their passing game as well, but Freeport was able to come up with defensive stands when needed, and also got aided by penalties. When they had the ball in the 2nd, Freeport was unable to get things going, but their kicking game bailed them out of being pinned deep in their end of the field each time as their talented punter, Vincent Clark, gave them the defensive breathing room needed with several field-flipping boots. Apollo Ridge threatened late in the quarter, but the young Freeport team came up with a big goal-line stand to run the clock out on the half.

The third quarter began the same way for Freeport, as they began 3 and out. A-R began on the 36 and on their 2nd play Fello hit Fitzroy for another big pass, this time a perfectly placed ball where Fitzroy outjumped the Freeport DB covering him for a touchdown, giving them 20-7 lead with 9:06 to go in the third. Another three and out followed. Apollo Ridge handed off to Logan Harmon twice and found paydirt to increase their lead further to 26-7 after a blocked extra point. The script repeated itself again over the next five minutes and Apollo increased its lead to 33-7 following a Keighton Reese run from 20 yards out. Harmon found the end zone on another run inside the 10 to expand the lead to 39-7 with 2:39 to go in the 3rd.
The fourth quarter began with a Dom Curci TD run to push the score to 46-7, which was answered by an 80 yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage by sophomore running back Ben Lane put Freeport’s second score on the board, making it 46-14 with 9:40 to go in the game. A safety wrapped up the scoring on a 48-14 Apollo Ridge victory.
