Saturday night’s matchup between Beaver and Seton LaSalle at Dormont Stadium produced some big plays in a see-saw battle that saw Beaver come out on the winning end, 29-20.

The first quarter was a feeling out process for both the Bobcats and host Rebels, as both teams looked o try and get their running game going. Beaver threatened late in the quarter after a favorable roll on a punt gave them possession at the Seton LaSalle 33. Wyatt Ringer ripped off a 15 yard run to put Beaver in prime scoring position, but the clock ran down as he was stuffed in the backfield and then had a sweep left tripped up by junior Tyler Buzalka.

The second quarter began 3rd and goal for Beaver from the 9 and senior Zach Harris barreled his way across the goal line to put Beaver in the lead. Seton went 3 and out on the ensuing drive and a bad snap on the punt gave Beaver advantageous position, taking over inside the Rebel 20. Wyatt Ringer carried twice to get inside the 10 and finished the drive himself by dashing into the endzone untouched to extend the Beaver lead. Mackenzie Boyd’s second PAT of the night extended the lead to 14-0.

Seton went 3 and out once again and Beaver scored on their next drive on a 30 yd TD pass from Marco Mamone to Anthony George. Beaver faked the kick and Tyler Ziggas rolled into the endzone to make it 22-0 with 7:06 to go in the 2nd.

Seton fired right back as senior QB Griffin Malloy hit Tyler Hill for a 70 yard TD pass to put the Rebels on the board. Malloy kept the 2pt attempt and Seton was alive, down 22-8 with 6:41 to go in the 2nd. Beaver was threatening inside the Rebel 10, but a fumbled snap led to a Seton recovery. Seton began a drive which appeared to stall, but a bubble screen from Malloy to Hill gained 50 into field goal range, but a bad snap prevented the kick and the score stood 22-8 Beaver at the break.

Beaver began with the ball in the 2nd half but it was Seton who threw the first punch as Hill went pick 6 a minute in to give his team a shot in the arm as he cut the lead to one score, 22-14. Beaver responded with a 70 yard drive which consumed 6 minutes and almost a dozen plays before James Finch found paydirt from 10 yards out to make the score 29-14 with 4:14 to go in the third. Seton marched down the field and Malloy hit Hill from 24yd out to cut the score to 29-20 with :50 to go in an exciting third quarter.

That rounded out all of the scoring action for the game, as Seton got no closer than midfield the rest of the game.

All in all, it was a good, hard fought football game between two very evenly matched teams and both teams should go home very proud of the way they played.

The Good: Beaver’s running game, Seton’s pass attack. The offensive strengths of both teams showed throughout the game.

The Bad: Seton’s defensive push, Beaver’s big play secondary defense as they got hit a few times deep. Two areas for both teams to work on in practice this week.
