For the first three quarters it looked as though an early game mistake would be the difference maker between Chartiers-Houston and Fort Cherry on Friday night.

At the final whistle it wasn’t anywhere near a factor.

The Fort Cherry Rangers got the early jump on the Chartiers-Houston Bucs following an opening drive fumble for the maroon and gold clad home squad. Senior Quarterback Maddox Truschel ran up the middle to give Fort Cherry the early 6-0 lead.

The extra point attempt was missed, but the Rangers quickly made up for it with and interception by Sophomore Lineman Brayden Kirby not even halfway through the fist quarter.

Fort Cherry was unable to get points off back-to-back turnovers, keeping Chartiers-Houston within one score. After a connection between Junior Quarterback Terry Fetsko and Senior Wide Receiver Colton Craig got the Bucs in the redzone, Chartiers-Houston took the lead on a one-yard run by Senior Lane Camden.

Late in the first half Chartiers-Houston was threatening, but the Rangers stood their ground knocking down a Bucs pass attempt on fourth and goal.

At halftime Fort Cherry’s missed extra point still loomed large over the game.

Chartiers-Houston would get a turnover in their favor with just over four minutes left in the third quarter inside Rangers territory. Entering the fourth quarter it was still 7-6 Bucs, with Chartiers-Houston driving, ready to add to their lead.

Then it happened.

Senior Running Back Jordan Irson found the endzone 21 seconds into the fourth quarter, and a successful extra point put Chartiers-Houston ahead 14-6.

From that point on the Bucs never looked back. Fort Cherry fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Chartiers-Houston took over on the Rangers 18-yard line.

Irson capped the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game extending the Bucs lead to 21-6 with just under ten minutes to play.

With 8:09 left Buccaneers Senior Colton Craig put the exclamation point on this one, taking a 54-yard interception to the house for a pick six. Now leading 27-6, Chartiers-Houston missed the extra point, bookending the scoring for the night.

Funny how that works.

Following a few more drives by each team the clock ran out on a 21-point victory for Chartiers-Houston.

The missed point after early on by Fort Cherry no longer mattered, despite seeming that way for the first 36 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Jordan Irson isn’t ready to rest on his team’s laurels with one win under the Bucs belt.

What is there to improve after a three-score win you might wonder?

“Everything, we always got to get better,” Irson said. “Trying to reach the next level, we always got to get better.”

Chartiers-Houston can keep that mindset next week with another game at Buccaneers Stadium when they welcome the Riverview Raiders (0-1, 0-0) next Friday at 7 p.m.

Fort Cherry will host the Avella Eagles (0-1, 0-1) next week in the Rangers home opener Friday at 7 p.m. in McDonald, PA.
