Last night’s contest between the Waynesburg Red Raiders and the visiting California Trojans ended decisively in Cal’s favor, as they drove home celebrating a convincing 49-7 victory. While the entire team played admirably, two Trojans stood out especially– QB Hunter Assad and RB Damani Stafford. Assad showed off his prowess on the ground and in the air; his speed, agility, ability to throw accurate passes on the run made for many highlight-reel plays. Meanwhile, Stafford placed himself in firm contention for the conference’s best RB as he quite literally ran over Waynesburg’s defense on the way to 3 TDs.

The Trojans struck first on just the 2nd play of the game when Assad scrambled to the right and tossed a 35 yd. dime to Powell. Waynesburg was unable to capitalize on a fumble recovery after their first drive fizzled out; on the next drive Stafford got his first TD by catching a screen pass and running it 40 yards into the endzone.

The Raiders responded later in the 2nd quarter as speedy receiver Zupper found himself uncovered in the middle of the field for an easy score. This was the closest they ever got to a California team which seemed to be playing on a different level. The half concluded 21-7 in the Trojan’s favor after a sustained drive ended in a 1 yard TD rush by Assad.

California began to pour on the points in the 2nd half. After another Stafford TD, the Waynesburg kick returner received a thunderous hit and fumbled the ball into the arms of the Trojan’s Addison Panepinto, who took it to the endzone.

Stafford and Panepinto each scored one more TD to reach the final tally of 49 points. Waynesburg’s defense looked exhausted playing against such talented runners, and their weak passing game, which suffered from dropped balls and miscommunication, meant that the Trojans could focus on stacking the box and forcing 3-and-outs.

Talented Raiders RB Braydon Woods led the WPIAL going into the game with 466 yards on the season so far but was held to short gains last night. Next week the Trojans face what may be a more difficult test against West Greene, while Waynesburg will continue to be tested against regional powerhouse Washington.
