Going into Friday night’s matchup between Carmichaels and Monessen, the Mighty Mikes heard the doubters from across the county following last week’s disappointing 21 point loss to West Greene. After a week of criticisms and noise, the Mikes were eager to put their best foot forward against a surging Monessen squad, and they certainly footed the bill.

“It’s a huge win for us,” said Michael Stewart, who accounted for 3 of the Carmichaels TDs on the night. “We went and struggled at that West Greene game because we were not in the right mindset and they came out and hit us. We just came out with a much stronger mentality this week.”

It was only on the third play when Stewart would prove that this week would not be a repeat of the stellar Pioneers defensive performance. On 2nd and 6, Trenton Carter found Stewart downfield for a 61 yard catch and run to put the Mikes up 7-0.

“He always knows exactly where I’m at,” Stewart said. “He always knows exactly where I’m going to go, and where I’m going to run so he can follow through.”

Carter had equal praise of his receiving cohort, “He’s a guy that I can rely on to move the ball. If I need a big play, I can get it out there to him.”

Bad news would get worse for the Hounds on the next drive, when after fumbling on their own 6 and the Mikes recovering, Carter would find Tyler Richmond in the endzone to put the Mikes up 14-0.

“A lot of people thought we were going to lay this one down but we just had to come out and step up and show that we were still in this thing,” said Carter following the game.

In the 2nd quarter, the Mikes would assert their dominance- scoring on all of their remaining possessions. Two short yardage runs from Stewart and Carter put the score at 26-0 midway through the second.

Michael Stewart would run in his 3rd of the half and Tyler Richmond would add another through the air in the last minute and a half to put the Mikes up 40-0 heading to the locker rooms.

The first half stats showed the dynamic duos dominance. Carter would go 7-13 for 143 Yards and Stewart would also eclipse the hundred mark and combine for 127 All-purpose-yards.

Coming out of the locker room, the Greyhounds put together a TD drive capped by a 26 yard TD pass from Lorenzo Gardner, however the Referees would cancel the game after spotting lightning before the Hounds could kick the extra point.

“That is a good football team. They have talent,” said Stewart. “The people we play in the next four games have to watch out because if we play like we did today we are going to be hard to beat.”

Carmichaels will hit the road to take on the California Trojans next weekend while the Greyhounds return home to host the West Greene Pioneers.
