Freeport gets convincing win over Mt. Pleasant

Typically 7 versus 10 matchups are good and close but this game was anything but as Freeport ran away with an easy 44-20 win over Mt. Pleasant.
Freeport got the ball to start the game. The drive started on their own 22 yard line. On the second play of the game Amos Glenn busted a big run down inside the Mt. Pleasant 20 yard line. On second down Drew Ross scored on a 10 yard run. That made the score 7-0 Freeport with 9:48 in the first quarter. Glenn was a key player for Freeport in the win he has 190 yards on 21 carries. That first drive was a good way to start the game for Freeport. “That was huge for us, just to come away with that is big” said Coach Gaillot
Mt. Pleasant got the ball for the time but they went three and out and had had to punt it away back to Freeport. They started their second drive at their own 17 yard line. It was another good drive and after the fourth play were already into Mt. Pleasant territory. They got inside the 25 yard line but after that the drive stalled and Freeport attempted a field goal which ended up being successful on a 41 yard kick by Judah Thompson which made it 10-0 Freeport with 4:19 in the first quarter.
Mt. Pleasant needed to answer and they did just that on the fourth play of the drive Cole Chatfield found Jarret Garn for a 58 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 10-7 Freeport with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Before the first quarter ended Freeport would get their 10 point lead back on a 5 yard run by Drew Ross. That made the score 27-7 Freeport at the end of the first quarter.
About midway through the second quarter, Freeport scored once again the drive started with decent field position at their own 40 yard line. The drive was finished off on a 37 yard touchdown run by Amos Glenn. That made the score 24-7 Freeport with 7:20 in the second quarter.
Late in the second quarter. Freeport was stuck very deep in their own territory and they went to punt it away and the kick was partially blocked. Mt. Pleasant started the drive already in the red zone on the third play Jarret Garn scored on a 11 yard run to make the score 24-14 Freeport at the half.
Mt. Pleasant to the ball to start the second half and on third down a very crucial play occurred Drew Ross scored on a 42 yard pick six to make the score 31-14 Freeport with 10:59 in the third quarter. “They ran the same play a few plays before, so I kind of figured they would drop to the flats and there it was, and then I turned up field and Bryson Paga made a big block” said Ross.
In the third quarter Mt. Pleasant had their opportunities. Their second drive started at their own 28 yard line. It was a long drive and Mt. Pleasant got inside the Freeport 10 yard line. Unfortunately the drive stalled on penalties and they attempted a field goal which was no good and the score remained 31-14 Freeport.
On another drive for Mt. Pleasant they started in Freeport territory but they were unable to move the ball and they decided to go for it on fourth down which was unsuccessful and they turned the ball over on downs. The score at the end of the third was 31-14 Freeport. The fourth quarter is where Freeport took complete control of the game. Early on in the fourth quarter Freeport had a long drive going and it was finished off on a 20 yard run by Drew Ross.
Ross was the player of the game for Freeport. He had 65 yards on 11 carries and was also 7 of 11 passing for 83 yards and had 5 total touchdowns. Three of those being runs, another by pass and he even had the pick six. “Guts, determination, resilience, one of the toughest kids we’ve ever had here” said Coach Gaillot.
Freeport would score on another drive which started in Mt. Pleasant territory and was finished off when Drew Ross found Bryson Paga on a 25 yard touchdown pass which made the score 44-14 Freeport with 7:46 remaining in the game.
Before the game ended Mt. Pleasant added one more touchdown when Jarret Garn scored on a 10 yard run which made the final score 44-20 Freeport.
With the win Freeport advances to the second round of the playoffs and will travel to Central Valley.
