As South Allegheny school officials cut the ribbon to inaugurate the grand opening of the brand new Gladiator Stadium before the kickoff of Friday night’s matchup against the Freeport Yellow Jackets it became clear. Nothing could ruin their night.
Playing on a brand new state of the art turf facility, the Gladiators took on a frequent WPIAL contender at the 3A level in Freeport. The Gladiators came into the night fresh off of an underwhelming win on the road at Yough behind the power of their Division 1 athlete Dashawn Carter.
Freeport opened up the game with a brisk down the field, before a bomb into the endzone came up sour with a Vinny Garansci interception. Defense was the theme in the first quarter, as the lone points would come off of a Isaac Wetzel field goal.

With two minutes left in the first quarter, South Alegheny would make a dramatic entrance into the red zone, with a 40 yard pass to Mike Michalski that set up the Gladiators at the Freeport 1. Penalties and negative plays had the Gladiators turn the ball over on downs. On the very next play to start the second quarter, Zach Clark took the ball 76 yards to the SA 1, and QB Gavin Croney would execute where the Gladiators could not.

After Freeport would fumble the ball into the endzone on their next offensive possession, the Gladiators brought the score within two, as Eric Wehrer and Mike Michaelski finally connected for an 84 yard strike down the sideline. Freeport’s offense couldn’t be stopped. Back to back scores from Zach Clark and Benny Lane, aided by a fumble in between, put the Yellow Jackets up 23-8 at the half and in full command of the game.

The game would only get uglier in the third quarter. A Benny Lane scamper and a Colton Otterman pick six ballooned the Yellow Jackets lead to 37-8.
Dashawn Carter helped put the Freeport lead to a more manageable 37-15 by stretching out to put his name into the scoresheet before the clock expired in the 4th.

What’s Next: The Gladiators will go back on the road next week as they will visit the Imani Christian Saints. The Yellow Jackets will try and extend their winning streak to three in a row as they play host to the Quaker Valley Quakers.
