Leading 14-7 at halftime, Jeannette turned a one-score game into a 48-12 route of Reynolds Friday night.

“It feels great to be back in Hershey,” said Jeannette head coach Roy Hall. “With Covid-19 and all, this has been the biggest distraction in my coaching career.”

The Jayhawks, 27-0, run through the third quarter all but wrapped up their third trip to Hershey, and second in four years.

Roberto Smith Jr. led the Jayhawks with 277 passing with a touchdown while adding 20 yards rushing and another three scores.

James Sanders had a monster game catching three passes for 191, including a 67-yard touchdown in the second quarter that extended Jeannette’s slim 7-6 lead.

Reynolds had pulled to within a point following an 11-play 46-yard drive capped off by Brayden McCloskey’s 3-yard run.

Smith Jr. gave the Jayhawks a 7-0 lead when he scored on a 4-yard run late in the first quarter; Sanders’s 59-yard reception set up the drive.

Jeannette came out of the locker room with guns blazing and scored four consecutive times in the third quarter.

Smith Jr. got things started with a 12-yard scramble. Following a bad snap, Jaydin Canady scored from five yards out. A 65-yard completion to Sanders was quickly followed by Smith Jr.’s 5-yard run putting the Jayhawks in front 34-6.

Jeannette then wasted little time putting the mercy rule in effect as McCloskey was sacked for a 14-yard loss, and Brandon Penn scooped up the loose ball and raced 36 yards for a touchdown.

“We made a few adjustments here and there,” said Hall. Our defense stepped up all night long, and our offense hit another gear in the second half.”

The two teams swamped fourth-quarter scores as Basil Wilson scored from ten yards out for Jeannette while Cole Toy capped the scoring with a 2-yard run.

“We made too mistakes, and had too many penalites,” said Reynolds head coach Josh Mull. “You can’t do that against a great football team and expect to win.”

“This group of seniors played with class and played toegther,” Mull concluded. “I hope their leadership this year will be passed on to our underclassman.”

Toy led Reynolds with 82 yards on 14 carries, while Jalen Wagner added 63 yards on 16 carries. Jeannette will now play either Steelton-Highspire or Bishop Guilfoyle in the state championship.
