High school football is one of those past times that everyone loves and enjoys, especially when it comes to the postseason. The sixth-seeded Avella Eagles flew to McKee Stadium on Friday to face off against the third-seeded Jeannette Jayhawks. The Jayhawks would prove their place in the 1A bracket as they convincedly dominate the Eagles 62-14.

Avella would start the game with the ball first, but their offense could not get anything going, so they punted. Jeannette, however, would only need two plays to get up on the board. Freshman quarterback Brad Birch saw junior and fellow sibling Brett Birch for a 30-yard completion and then again for a 10-yard touchdown.

The Eagles looked to answer back, but Brett Birch had other plans as he intercepted junior Eagles quarterback K.J. Rush. Birch would not take it to the house, but his efforts were not in vain as senior Kaelan Piscar finished the job for the score. The point after was missed, so the score was 13-0.

Avella’s offense on the next drive finished with only five yards so they had to punt it away.

Jeannette wasted little time getting up on the board again as for this drive, it took them five plays. Senior James Sanders found an open lane and took off for a 34-yard rushing touchdown. The Jayhawks went for two and with the help of Brett Birch catching senior Toby Cline’s ball, they were able to make it a 21-0 game.

Avella tried to answer, but they ended up turning the ball over on downs. Jeannette would capitalize on Avella’s misfortune and use their sibling combo to get on the board again to finish off the first quarter.

The Eagles wanted to make sure everyone knew they were still fighting as K.J. Rush took it himself up the middle for a five-yard touchdown. The point after was good and the score was 28-7.

The Jayhawks did not like that, especially since this was their turf and on the following kickoff, James Sanders took it to the house for his club to make it 35-7.

The Eagles wanted to go out and get another one, but Rush was picked off again. This time by sophomore Noah Sanders. With that interception, the Jayhawks were placed at Avella’s 10-yard line. Brad Birch found senior Toby Cline in the endzone for a touchdown. It is now 42-7.

Avella seemed like they went backward more than forward and on a 4th and 18 on their own 36, they had no choice but to punt it away.

The Jayhawks would get the ball back and the drive would end with another touchdown. Brad Birch decided to stick to the ground and ran the ball 40 yards for the touchdown.

The Eagles ran their offense back on the field with about 3:42 left in the half on their 20-yard line. Rush took the snap and Jeannette’s defense was all over him. Jaydin Canady would be credited with the sack and a forced fumble and sophomore Ryan Kimmel scooped the loose ball up and scored. By the time Roberto Smith Sr. made the point after, only eight seconds ran off the clock.

The Eagles’ next drive would be dismal as they went three-and-out, but the Jayhawks continued their juggernaut of an offense and put up seven more points before the half. This was thanks to Smith Sr. for the one-yard score.

To open up the second half, the Jayhawks would see their first turnover on the night as a fumble was caused and Avella senior Blaze Allen fell on the rolling ball.

Avella and Jeannette would trade-off possession as their next drives were turned over on downs.

The Eagles would get on last positive from this game and that would be when freshman quarterback Cole Jaworowski found senior Tanner Terensky for a quick 11-yard touchdown to seal up the game with a final score of 62-14.

Avella’s season is now over and they must rest until next year, but Jeanette will not be able to rest for long as they must get ready for the two-seeded Rochester Rams on the road for the semifinals next week.
