Luke McCory rushed for 205 yards on only 11 carries as Laurel smoked Freedom 48-0 Saturday night.

“The kids are playing good football right now,” said Laurel head coach Brian Cooper. “We’re focused on getting better each week. We have a bigger picture in mind for this season. If we stay focused I think we can accomplish what we to accomplish.”

McCory scored on runs of 62, 21, 22, and 58 yards for the Spartans.

Freedom held Laurel on downs on their initial drive. Laurel scored on five straight first-half possessions to leave them one point short of the mercy rule at halftime.

Quarterback Kobe DeRosa opened the scoring with a 3-yard run with 3:45 to play in the first quarter.

McCoy then ripped off his four straight touchdown runs.

Freedom was limited to only 42 yards of offense in the first half and finished the game with 87 yards.

Carter Slowinski led the Bulldogs throwing for 85 yards and completing 6-of-16 passes for 85 yards with an interception.

Laurel then put the mercy rule into effect on DeRosa’s 70-yard run early in the second half. DeRosa rushed for 136 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns.

Landon Smith capped the scoring with a 5-yard run with 22 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Laurel rushed for 429 yards on 39 carries as a team.

“I still don’t think they have reached their potential,” Cooper said with a smile when talking about DeRosa and McCoy. “I still believe that they have room to grow as players, and that is the scary part.”

Saturday night marked the second consecutive 48-0 win for the Spartans, who blanked Riverside by an identical score last weekend.

“The kids are starting to get it,” said Cooper of his defense. “We have some kids in new places from where they were last year. Once they learn and utilize their speed, that can lead to short drives for the other team. That is what has been happening for us on defense.”

Laurel will aim for 7-0 when they host New Brighton next Friday night.

“This is a special team,” Cooper concluded. “However, we need these guys to stay focused every week because we have a lot more we want to accomplish this season.”
