Leechburg dominated on both sides of the ball while visiting Jefferson Morgan Friday night, finishing with an incredible score of 69-16. Running back Braylan Lovelace led the charge with a combination of speed and physicality, tallying 4 touchdowns on the ground. Leechburg’s defense also appeared in top shape as the opposing offensive line struggled to keep Eli Rich and Lucas Gamble from hounding QB Cole Jones.

The Devils came out swinging in the first quarter. They began with a 50 yard rushing TD from Lovelace, then took the ball back immediately with an interception by Burke. Kline then hauled in a short touchdown pass on a slant route, giving Leechburg a 13-0 lead only a few minutes into the game.

This pattern was the order of the day– Jefferson Morgan lost a fumble on the next possession, then gave up a turnover-on-downs on their own 10 yard line after back to back sacks by Rich and Gamble. Both of these turnovers were followed by touchdowns by the Devils: one a 30 yard rush by Lovelace, the other a 10 yard rush by Burke.

The Rockets gave up one more interception (Foley) and one more turnover on downs before halftime. Touchdowns by Burke, Rich, Jake Cummings, Floyd, Foley, and Lovelace gave the Devils a tally of 63 in the first half; meanwhile, Jefferson Morgan had not reached the end zone, and rarely even entered the Devils’ side of the field.

The Rockets were able to get some momentum in the 2nd half– including Jones’ impressive 51 yard bomb to Fowler down the right sideline, their first score of the game. The celebration was short lived, however, as Lovelace continued his dominant performance with what would be Leechburg’s final touchdown of the game. Jefferson Morgan put together a couple of substantial drives on the ground against Leechburg’s backup defense. They scored a final touchdown off a scramble by Jones, who threw a dart to the wide-open Barnhart. But the running clock and Leechburg’s overwhelming dominance in the first half left no doubt as to who would come out on top.

The Devils enjoyed a comfortable win last night as the clearly better team. They will need to stay focused in practice as they take on the more formidable Summit Academy next week.
