Leopards Drop 49 On Chartiers Valley in WPIAL Quarterfinals 49-21

Friday marked the beginning of the WPIAL Football playoff season but on a cold windy night at The Beach at James Weir Stadium it marked the beginning of the Devin Whitlock and Quinton Martin show in the WPIAL.
The first name is well known. Devin Whitlock exploded onto the scene in his freshman year at Monessen, leading the Greyhounds to a WPIAL Playoff berth in 2018. After transferring to Belle Vernon, he has commanded the attention from the entire section as one of the best athletes in the area.

The second may be new to the scene for readers. Quinton Martin stepped into the starting role following an injury to Dane Anden against Trinity. Heralded as one of the top talents in the freshman class, he’s already making the highlight reel.

Both teams’ offenses started slow friday night, trading middling drives up until the end of the 1st quarter when Devin Whitlock punched in a sneak from two yards out to make the score 7-0.

The Chartiers Valley Colts wouldn’t be held back for long, as an immediate response in a fantastic catch by Abe Ibrahim tied it up. The game looked as though it would be a shootout the way both offenses were humming.

On the following drive, Whitlock scored once again from 31 yards to put the Leps up by 7 and in the driver’s seat. Both teams would trade back to back to back interceptions to finish out the first half.

Belle Vernon came out of the locker room with a vengeance in the third quarter, with Quinton Martin scoring from 32 yards out to make it 21-7, then doing it again from 36. 4 minutes later to make the score 28-7. The Colts defense had no answers.

A Chartiers Valley fumble in their own territory on the following drive would lead to possibly the most magical play in the Leopards young season. On the Colts 26, Devin Whitlock took the ball up the middle, spun out of a tackle, spun off a defender, spun out of another tackle, and in for 7 to make the score 35-7 for the teams 3rd TD in the quarter and to effectively seal the game.

Jackson Jewel as well as Quinton Martin would add onto the scoring in the 4th quarter to end the game at 49-21. In the past 6 quarters of starting, Martin has notched 5 touchdowns.

What’s Next?: Belle Vernon will travel to The Pit next week for arguably the biggest game in District 7, with the winner heading to North Allegheny for the WPIAL title.
