Nestled in the hills of Westmoreland County lies one of the best rivalries in all of the WPIAL. The communities that surround the high schools of Mt. Pleasant and Southmoreland are as passionate as they are tight-knit, and that would be on full display Friday night in a rubber match between the Vikings and the Scotties.

“The fans brought the energy tonight,” QB Tyler Reese said. “A bunch of people, a bunch of screaming, it brought out the intensity in everyone tonight

Tyler Reese, Aaron Alakson, and Robbie Labuda headed the three headed monster that is the Mt. Pleasant Wing T rushing attack for the Vikings and would give the Scotties defense headaches the entire night through.

Turnovers, mistakes and missed opportunities would characterize much of the offense for either team in the first half. A Mt. Pleasant fumble at midfield, followed by a deep drive by the Scotties put the Vikings on their heels, however, a big time turnover by Mt. Pleasant would turn the momentum in a big way.

That would become apparent in the mid first quarter when 3 consecutive bruising runs from Labuda on the ensuing drive put the Vikings up by 7. The Vikings would only be getting started on an undersized Scotties front.

Later in the second quarter, Tyler Reese would step into the endzone for the first time of the night, putting the Vikings up by 14.

Southmoreland wouldn’t be held down for very long, as a throw to Josh Bass gave the Scotties excellent field position for Anthony Govern to will his way into the endzone to keep the score 14-7 before halftime.

In the second half, the game was the Vikings to take.. Both teams would trade turnovers to open the half before Tyler Reese would completely flip the tone of the game. On 3rd down, Anthony Govern would scramble and underthrow his target, directly into the arms of Reese. Reese would take the ball 73 yards to the house and five the Vikings a commanding lead on the game at 21-7.

In the remaining 3rd and 4th quarters, Robbie Labuda would pick up his 2nd and 3rd TDs on the night to put the score at 34-7 before the final siren.

With the win, Mt. Pleasant has put a stranglehold on the Interstate conference, leaving only Elizabeth Forward as possible usurpers for the title. The Vikings will head to Yough and host Brownsville before their matchup with the Warriors in October. The Scotties will try to rebound against Derry in an out of conference matchup next weekend.
