Twenty three schools offered Plum linebacker a chance to get an education and play football for them. Max Matolcsy had offers from all the Ivy’s, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Fordham…but it was the Quaker program at UPenn that got him the most excited. Yesterday he announced he was ending his recruitment and heading east for college after his senior year.

We asked Max about his decision:

PFN: How long have you played football? *

Max: Seven years

PFN: Why did you choose to commit to the Quakers? *

Max: Penn has everything I wanted, amazing academics, rich football history, not too far from home, and amazing coaching.

PFN: Why commit early/commit to them? *

Max: Everything just ended up coming into place and I felt like it was time. With the questions of the upcoming season I wanted to make my decision now instead of holding it out.

PFN: Who was your biggest influence at UPenn, who recruited you? *

Max: Coach DuPont definitely was my biggest influence, he’s recruited me throughout the whole process and really shows me how Penn is perfect for me.

PFN: What are they getting in player like you? *

Max: They are getting a hard worker, and also a great teammate and leader who will do everything he can for his team.

PFN: What was the recruiting process like for you? *

Max: The recruiting process was great and also a bit stressful. It was awesome having so many opportunities and learning about so many schools. It was a big stressful when narrowing schools down.

PFN: How did the Covid 19 pandemic affect your decision? *

Max: With COVID playing a role in recruiting it was tough because us players could not go on visits. But I went to camp last summer, and game in the fall, and a junior day in the spring at Penn, and I knew they were exactly what i wanted.

PFN: What position were you recruited for? *

Max: Linebacker

PFN: Do you know what you’d like to study? *

Max: Business, specifically finance

PFN: What role did your parents play in your decision? *

Max: My parents definitely helped me a lot throughout this process, and supported my decision 100%.

PFN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the Quakers program? *

Max: The feeling of family at Penn is amazing, and I’m excited to play with my new teammates for the next four years.

PFN: What are you most looking forward to while playing for the UPENN? *

Max: I’m looking forward to competing against other high caliber players, and competing for an Ivy League tittle.

PFN: Tell everyone out there in the football world something they’d never know about you until you told them: *

Max: Baseball was actually the sport I thought i was going to play in college till about 5th grade when I started playing football.

PFN: Who is the person who most influenced you in your football career? *

Max: My dad and my grandfather influenced me a lot throughout my career, always being there for me, pushing me, and giving me tips and encouragement.

PFN: What is it you’d like all your high school teammates and fans to know about your decision that you might have a hard time saying in person? *

Max: My decision to go to UPenn is more than just football. It’s a decision for not only the next 4 years, but the next 40. And I hope everyone in my community respects my decision.
