From start to finish it was domination for State College in their 49-14 win over Gateway. It was just a great performance for them on offense and defense.
Gateway got the ball to start the game but went three and out. State College started their first drive on their own 40 yard line. It was the perfect drive to start the game. The drive featured 3 passes by Eddie Corkery to Ty Salazer the third one was a catch down to the Gateway 4 yard line. Lamar Wilson finished the drive off on a 4 yard run making it 7-0 State College with 8:57 in the first. “It 100% set the tone, you know we had I think that was the tempo of that drive was really good, we came with a game plan we felt really good about, our kids executed it extremely well, and we just played fast, I think they weren’t quite ready for the speed we came out with in that first drive with, and that really set the tone” said Coach Lintal.
Gateway got the ball for a second time and went three and out yet again. Gateway struggled on offense in the first quarter and on one drive a ball was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Cooper Brushwood making it 14-0 State College with 4:55 in the first quarter. That would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
Early on in the second quarter State College extended their lead on a 48 yard pass from Eddie Corkery to Cooper Brushwood making it 21-o State College. Corkery had a great game he was 11 of 12 for 217 yards. “Edddie works his tail off, he’s had a great offseason and worked extremely hard, the throw he made to Cooper Brushwood, you know 50 plus yards in the air from the middle of the field to the numbers, just an absolute perfect throw, what a great night he had, the guys on the perimeter really did a nice job, not just catching the ball but also making blocks downfield and really extending plays, really proud of the team effort” said Coach Lintal.
Later in the quarter Gateway was driving and the ball was intercepted and returned for a second touchdown in the game this one by Ty Salazer. State College had a good game on defense as well. “Three interceptions with Ty Salazer, Cooper Brushwood and AJ Fry, those three have tremendous ball skills, all three of them are wide receivers for us as well, and those guys just making some big time plays at big time times, you know to be able to not only intercept it, but to find your way into the endzone and really turn it into an offensive play that was awesome” said Coach Lintal.
Gateway finally got on the score board late in the first half when Elvis Koutsakis found Kacey Carter for a 18 yard touchdown pass and that made the score 28-7 at halftime.
State College got the ball to start the second half and again it was a great drive to set the tone in the second half. Eddie Corkery found Michael Gaul for a 52 yard touchdown pass making the score 35-7 State College with 10:11 in the third quarter. “I mean it was alright, I have to give credit to my O-Line they gave me the time I needed, my receivers got open, they dropped covered four a lot so we had to work around that, Lamar got kicked out but he was having a hell of a game, Rowan stepped in punched up the hole, the whole time, the O-Line gave him the holes, and our defense they stepped in this game, they had two picks returned for touchdowns, we were firing on all cylinders, our offense we’re gonna keep going to work and hopefully air it out a little more” said Quarterback Eddie Corkery about the performance.
Later in the third quarter State College put the mercy rule into effect on a 1 yard run by Darryl Lunon. Shortly after Gateway answered the State College touchdown when Koutsakis found Kacey Carter for a 84 yard touchdown pass and that made the score 42-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Before the game ended State College added one last touchdown making the final score 49-14. Next week State College plays Altoona and Gateway will travel to North Allegheny.
